How much do you pay for a c-section in your area. How is the cost made up. Would your vet do an x-ray before doing the c-section?
My mum's just been charged £500 for one pup!!! As the other two were born naturally and we've only ended up with one puppy! A friend who only lives 20 minutes away was charged £350 with 8 live resulting pups! Somethings wrong somewhere!

I wouldn't expect the vet to do an x-ray before a c-section, because it's usually an emergency operation and minutes are vital. I would imagine the same amount of anaesthetic, electricity, staff, medication, sutures etc are used for delivering one pup or eight, so I'd expect the cost to be the same however many pups were born ...
One was a 5 lb dog a Pomeranian the other was a 20 kg dog, so surely anaesthetic etc. is a lot less?

But the surgery is much more intricate in a small dog than a larger - not as much room for your hands ...
My vet charges £250 for a caesarian section but unfortunatly he will not perform the operation out of hours, which is a bit silly as most of the time you usually find yourself in trouble early hours of the morning which is not really very good :(

Ive had 3 in total. One was an emergency due to a separated placenta during day time hours. The bitch had all the 6 puppies delivered alive and well but she had quite a lot of bleeding, that one cost me £430.
The next was booked in as a routine as it was a singleton that was about £250.
The last was an emergency (Lazy girl who couldn't be doing with going into labour even though her waters broke and she was given Oxytocin - she thought it a much better idea to have a good sleep) in daytime hours - 3 puppies born £250.
Im in Essex which I think is one of the more expensive areas for vets (acording to petplan!)
That seems a bit much though, did your mum get a detailed Bill?

We've had 2 over the past 18 months, both same breed of dog, similar size, first cost £800 in a normal surgery in hours, second cost £300 on a bank holiday monday at 2am.....both had 6 pups!!
Haven't a clue how they justify that! Both straight forward ops, no problems all over and done in a hour.
My girl had a c-section 3 weks ago today. It was in working hours and cost me $800 australian dollars. With the 3 visits in the 2 days previous to this it all cost $1000.
Can be very expensive but worth it. From what I understand it makes no difference if it is a single pup or a litter of 8.

So what happens out of hours then?
I paid £650.00 at midnight for 1 dead pup 2 years ago, I live in the Midlands.
My out of hours was cheaper than normal surgery times, we had to use an emergency out of hours vet as ours doesn't cover these times and yet it was cheaper, hence to say we have swapped vets and now use the emergency vet as our full time one and original has lost yet another customer.

Last c.section we had was 2001 and that was £800 only delivered one live pup, the others came naturally.
I have have lost a bitch during c.section with 6 pups, also 6 live pups, that bill was £950 (1999)

We just had a c-section 2 weeks ago our first in many years, our JRT delivered 5 healthy pups but the last one got stuck across the birth canal the just trained vet tried to get the pup out with forceps against our wishes & ended up pulling the pups leg off. I was mad at her & thank god shes leaving our practice.
So the old vet came in 2am & gave her a c-section which took all of 30minutes to complete, cost £150 1 dead puppy but 1 happy mum who is doing really well & the pups eyes are now open.
Our vets bill for the year April 2004-April 2005 was £1,668.24p. Not bad as most of that was just for vaccinations, eye testing & pet passports. We're in Carlisle.

I had a C section for a freinds bitch at aout 7pm and that cost £450 in Feb 2000. In August 2007 I paid about the same for one early evening for my own bitch who had inertia with her third litter which was 4 pups (one of which I lost).
Brainless I didn't know that you had a time machine :d Sorry, you know me I just can't resist.
It's amazing how the price differs so much even at the same vets. I know in Yorkshire it's a lot cheaper but you wouldn't go trapsing (I know can't spell again) all the way there with a dog in whelp. It's just so sad that after all my mums hard work, one being born dead, one dying at 6 days and the other one doing OK but still lots of hard work for my mum and now she doesn't know what to do. At the moment I think that she's going to give up on the breed, she's had so many years of upset with them that I think the time has come. I feel so sorry for her because she was soooo looking forward to this.
It just annoys me that the so and so's who don't care less about their dogs have pups so easily adn people who care have all the rubbish.

Well they shoukldn't have numbers the wrong way around on the computer then!! It really bugs me as I am always getting numbers wrong because I am going by the phone keypad, as I can't see the numbers.

Hi,
The trouble with vet's are they are a law onto themselves.
That's why you have to do your homework on a vet, before
hand. Some vet's are in the job where money is there main concern.
Profit margin!
Not all !!! Its like a Taxi one will charge £2.00 per mile another £4.00
same petrel, But! if we are daft enough to pay it, they are going to charge it!
I travel to a vet that is a third cheaper than a local vet, for the same thing.
I feel that these vet's need our support. It doesn't mean because you
pay more you get more value for your money.
Regards
Denese
