I have a 12year old chocolate cocker spaniel, who three years ago was diagnosed with an enlarge heart, now he has started to go off his legs if he chases birds etc like he is drunk, then flops down until he has his breath back, no medication is work via the vets, if anyone could give advice I would be grateful. Many thanks

Hi Guest
I'm afraid I don't know much about this sort of thing, but have you tried an alternative medicine?? Canine Chemist do them and they have a website, I think they are like a herbal remidy (I may be wrong).
I hope things work out

Hi.
There are many drugs on the market to help with heart failure in dogs, it is an incredibly common problem for old dogs. My dog has identical symptoms and was given drugs, he lived another 3 yrs with no further problems until the very end. May I suggest you seek a second opinion, as we see loads of dogs in our kennels with this problem too and they all do very well with help from drugs.
Keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi guest, did the vet mention dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) or any other cause for the enlarged heart? Can you tell us if he is on any medication from the vet and if he has seen a cardiology specialist? Also does he have a cough and do you ever notice that his heartbeat is irregular? Sorry for all the questions, but there are various causes for enlargement of the heart.
