Zanta 14 wks old very heavy dog,newfie/berner she likes to meet people but is a little enthusiastic and jumps up and we have some older people who walk the fields where we walk and lots of children too, no harm meant she just thinks everybody should love her,she also jumps up at visitors would be grateful for any tips thanx.

Train her to sit before allowing people to make a fuss of her. NEVER ever fuss her unless she IS sitting....

Thanx i will try that. She is often quite near by when approached by people so shouldnt be too difficult when off the lead over fields one good thing these dogs are not like labs or gsd they dont run so fast and are easier to keep up with.

I agree with digger. NEVER give her any sort of "reward" for jumping up. And you must tell people to ignore her until she is sitting. (even when you are out on a walk) You should also get people to bend down to her when giving attention, so she has no reason to jump up. I have a 17 week old mastiff puppy, and although i have never had a problem with jumping up, (he has never even tried to do it) i was ready to deal with it if it happened. Because of his large size (especially when full size!) , it would be very dangerous for him do jump up on anyone!

Hope that helps a bit. :-)

PS. Perseverance is the key!!! ;-)

My current pup is the most persevering pup that I've had, from her point of view that is :P

I have always taught all of my dogs to sit before anything is bestowed upon them, but with Callia (6 month Briard)  she manages to sit and then go into 2 front paws of the ground, beg mode. Running her lovely big thick claws all the way down the front of your legs........our legs look like pink striped rock

Never had such a springy pup as this one, so I'll be watching this thread :)

Once you have taught her to sit you could then teach her to jump up on command. This doesn't sound as bad as it reads, actually. ;) I taught my 35kilo male Munster to come up on command as I have a 5 year old grandson, and he had knocked him over. Chance will now only come up on command ( which he doesn't get very often now :D )
