The pups are 7 weeks old today. Mum has stopped feeding them. She looked like she was drying up. So why oh why has her milk bar filled up again? She is literally oozing milk now more so than through out the first 7 weeks!

I had this with a bitch once, and she then got mastitis.
I learnt that for the bitches own good, that it is a good
idea to wean the last week, little by little. Starting off
with her going in at night for two hours, then to one hour,
then to half and hour then to quarter of an hour, then
off. By doing this it reduces the bitches milk with out milk
busting at the seems.
Keep a check out for lumpy or hard areas developing in the
milk. If they are hot to touch then go to your vets.
With my bitch that over produced I had to go and get some
help from the vet. Galastrop I think its called. Very expensive.
However I did learn from that experience.
Hope all goes well.

I am keeping an eye on her as I was worried that she may have mastitis but so far nothing, no hotness or hardness and milk easy to express. She's been telling the pups off herself for suckling as they use their teeth now. I don't separate my bitches I just give them somewhere to get away from the pups.

Hi Bec
My bitch had this problem with her first litter and did get mastitis badly, her back teat actually burst when the vet felt it! Since then when the pups have been taken off them we massage the bitches teats to stop the milk from clogging up. There are also some homeopathic tablets you can get from Dorwest Herbs that reduce the milk for the life of me can't remember which at the moment.

Well she decided to let the pups suckle again yesterday and they have all shrivelled up again! I'm not sure what's going on!
