I was asking for advice on mastitus as i suspect my bitch may be developing it.  I was talking to a woman on the internet and she was telling me her dog developed it with a litter she had last year where the bitch went through an operation to have the mammory gland removed and this year she bred her again and the same thing happened .  So if your dog develops it once, is their more chance of it reacurring with future litters,  what im asking is should i have my dog spayed to prevent this happening in the future , would i be irresponsable to breed her again if she needed an operation this time ?

Mastitis is an infection and inflammation of the mammary gland, and can happen at any time during lactation, whether following pregnancy or false pregnancy. If caught early (by ensuring a steady flow of milk to remove the pressure) infection can be avoided. But if it's left untreated, infection can set in, requiring antibiotic treatment, and the pups removed and handreared. Basically, it's best to ask for veterinary advice sooner rather than later.

Agree with JG - & just to say that it is potentially a life threatening condition. Luckily most cases are not that severe & as JG said if caught early enough antibiotics will usually sort out the infection.
In extreme cases mammaries may need to be removed.
If masitis is suspected vets advice should be sought sooner rather than later - I always say I'd rather have a wasted vets bill & know we're ok - than leave it too late & have a potentially dangerous situation.  :)

thanks all well i just got back from the vet and she said that shes fine , so maybe i overreacted i thought it felt a little hard though obviously vet knows best.  , Charlie is feeding them now. So all is well
