What do you think is the best thing to line your puppy pen.
I was using newspaper but my lovely Chestnut & White Blenheim puppies were a muggy brown and grey clolour as all the print is coming off on their coats.
Yesterday I switched to wood shavings the type used for rabbits.
It's everywhere....and I mean everywhere.
Pups pen is in the corner of my kitchen and the sawdust is in the bathroom ,up the stairs, all over the living room and I even found it in my bed this morning.
Was thinking of using shredded paper but not sure about that as it can be quite long and windy and I thought it may be dangerous and just as messy as the shavings.
What does everyone else use?????????

I use newspaper, but fortunately my dogs re grey to start with :D  I do top it with vetbed though, and pick it up as soon as it is wet in the pen area.  Many people use white shreded tissue paper bought by the bale, sawdust and shavings can cause respiratory problems and shoudl nto be used.

It's being hoovered as we speak.I hate the stuff, but I used it in desperation.I thought the specially  marketed stuff for rabbits was ok tho

You are reading the wrong papers LOL.  Try the Daily Mail, the print doesn't come off of that for some reason.

what about asking at your local chippy if you could buy a pack of that white paper they use to wrap their chips in im sure it would be too expensive :D

I find having vet bed covering the paper, does not give a problem, the puppies also stay nice and dry on top as their wet goes through.
they wash and dry so easily.

Doesnt that encourage them messing the sleeping area? Dont think the "chippie" paper would be absorbant enough :( I have only ever used newspaper, and pups have a bath a couple of days before going to their new homes.

we put a pond liner down, with vet bed near the opening of the pen and  news paper at the far away place so when you go in you not stand in wee and poo ,only puppie climbing up at you,
the pond liner is easy to clean down.

My thoughts exactly, if you put vet bedding on the floor they will think it's ok to pee and poo on it, so will do the same in their bed.  I just use newspaper and give them a bath!

The white paper is fine with newspaper underneath. If you don't put newspaper underneath you need loads and loads of the white paper.

The white news in the chippy is about £7 for a massive pack (My mum has a chippy & I use it for my pups)

Great stuff with vet bed as well - does not leave marks all over the bottom of the pan!

Try getting in touch with your local newspaper and see if you can buy some of the unprinted paper or get in touch with a paper supplier.

Did not make myself clear.  The vet bed covers their sleeping part. they have a further space to wee and poo on the paper.  I know accidents happen, but I have usually found they move to the paper to wee and poo.  I have tried shredded white paper and all sorts saw dust etc. in the past, but it does tend to travel all over the place and make everywhere look a mess.

i know its nothing to do with pups, but i over heard a women in the pet shop the other day she put cat litter in her rabbits hutch instead of straw because it was easier to clean, never heard that one before !!
- By caz3536 [gb] Date 29.06.05 13:29 UTC
I use cat litter for my rats cage, the dog eats it, so I have to be careful

Sorry abit off topic :-)

If you find the printing depot for the newspapers, they will often let you have ends of rolls of paper which are white, and completely unused and clean.

You have to cut them up yourself, but so what?

I get mine from the Argus printing place, but just source your local one.

Hi,
I have to smile, when I hear this, do you know if you put newspaper in, it is so easy
to train your pup when you have them, to newspaper.
If you put carpet in, the pup goes looking for carpet to wee and poo on if it can't
get outside.
The breeder I had two of my pups of. had them sleeping on beige carpet!!
guess what they looked for!!! Yes! my beige and cream carpets and rugs, to wee and poo on!!!!
I would get a mad coloured piece of lino a!!!
Regards
Denese

Shavings have gone in the bin and I'm back to what I was using in the first place....Vet bed and Newspaper
- By Blue Date 29.06.05 21:12 UTC
Newspaper, the white paper used in the chipshops on top of that and vet bed.
