Topic Dog Boards / General / Staff proof Extendable lead
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 29.06.05 08:35 UTC
Can anyone recommend a strong extendable lead, Rosie has chewed through 5!!! A few nibbles and they snap and she is off.

I do tell her off for chewing her lead but a few nibbles here and there and they go..

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction..I need a extendable lead for her because her recall is rubbish...she is great in her classes but take her outside and she becomes deaf!

Thank you

which kind have you been using? i used to use the thin cord like ones but didnt find them very strong. i now use the extendable tape ones. the tape is approx 3/4 inch wide and is alot stronger :-)
- By ClaireyS Date 29.06.05 08:56 UTC
but even the tape ones can be chewed and I doubt they would last long - I suggest a muzzle ;)  (TIC)

thats true claireyS but they might last a bit longer :-) what about a leather lead smeared with vic's ( or other nasty tasting stuff) until they've learnt not to chew the leads :-)

What happens is she sees another dog, is so desperate to go and play she makes a bid for freedom!!

I havent yet found anything my dogs find unpalatable!! :D

Thank god!  I was starting to think I had the only dog who had 'selective hearing' when outside.  I mean, I know men suffer greatly with this problem, but dogs?! :D

Sorry, can't help with the lead business, but then you knew that already :D :D

Oh no I couldnt muzzle Rosemary she's upset enough about being on the lead while the other two are off!!

I'll try the tape lead and see how we get on wth one of those, I was using the thin ones and they are USELESS!

Thanks :)

:D :D Keeley comments!!

I use a tape one on my Alfie, he hasnt snapped it yet (but then he doesnt chew it) but he is sooooo strong when he gets to the end of it I have to grab something to anchor myself down :D :D

Try carrying a small water pistol and everytime she goes to chew it give her a squirt along with a firm no

Oh yes Im liking that idea Archer! I bought two water pistols last week, I'll have to get myself a holster! :D

I use tape-style extendable leads, but I started off with the smallest size for when Millie was a puppy.  However she has got so strong as she grew that I virtually had no control and she was going where she liked and the narrow tape leads are quite 'elasticy' and she was able to pull me down the road with it until I could 'reel' her in.

So on my brother in law's advice, I went to PAH and bought the biggest toughest tape-style extendable lead, the kind for rotties and GSD's etc. and now I'm back in control!  She can't pull me anymore and hopefully I won't be falling over as many times.

Trust me, they may not look it but Scottie's are very strong dogs - thats why they call them 'the big dog on little legs'.

And I don't care if the groomers laugh at me when I take Millie in on the biggest lead they've ever seen :D

See my other post about having dogs on extending leads by the road.

Please, if you value your dog, don't do this.

I only use mine over the park when there are bitches / castrated males around because Alfie is a nightmare to get back :(

I would try the tape extendable leads, as recommended.

Last year I watch a guy walking his JRT.  He stopped to pick up his dog's poop and in a flash the JRT bit through the cord type extandable lead and was off like a rocket.  So it's not just your dogs that can easily bite through the extendable leads.

LOL...Know the feeling. I dread our boy seeing a cat before I do and have a chance to reign him in and lock the lead...otherwise I just have to pray that there's a lamp post, tree or garden gate near by!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 29.06.05 09:57 UTC
Please, never, ever, ever have an extending lead on any other setting than 'locked, short' when you're near a road. If necessary, take two leads - a normal one for the street walking and change onto the extending lead when you reach the fields or the park. Otherwise your dog is effectively off-lead, and could be under a car before you have time to stop him.

This isn't scare-mongering; I've seen it happen, and it isn't pretty. :(

I alway keep my lead on a lock when near roads, Im paranoid about cars etc, I always take out a spare lead incase of an escape!

Thanks foe the advice Jeangenie..a reminder of what could potential happen never hurts, we're reminded to keep our wits about us!

Good point JG...I do use one of these leads but am careful close to roads and always keep it locked short until safely away from traffic. I have also found that they do take quite a lot of 'practice' to be able to use them safely and effectively and it frightens me the number of times I have seen owners allowing their dog full range close to busy roads. It only takes a split second for a tragedy to happen.

Ok this may not be as easy to handle but they are a lot cheeper - I used a lunge line from a horse store, they are strong and with a little practice fairly easy to handle, although I confess that I mainly use for recall training rather than for regular walks. Depending how long it needs to be you may also want to consider a long horse lead rope - even a lab takes a few minutes to chew through one of them :D
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 29.06.05 13:34 UTC
Thats a good idea. DO you have any idea where I might be able to get one?
- By Bluebell [gb] Date 29.06.05 13:38 UTC
Any tack shop should sell them. You may need to shop around a bit to get the best price. A normal length lead rope (well the last I bought) was about £2 and I think the lunge line was about £3 ish

Bluebell, you're a mind reader!

Hi Blondiflops, I know you posted this a long time ago so you have probably solved the problem by now.  I agree with most people, the tape leads are very good.  We keep our staff on an extendable lead and started off with a rope one but it was chewed to bits within a few weeks.  We replaced it with a tape one and it has been going strong for a few years now, despite our little love grabbing hold of it and shaking it around in her mouth when she is excited!  We do put her on a short lead when walking her round to the park to stop her from lunging in the road (and to stop her from saying unwelcome hello's to the uninitiated!)
