I'm new to this and was hoping someone out there might be able to give me some information.....I've been breeding my chihuahua (male) with a chihuahua/pomeranian (female) We've been breeding them for 2 days now and he gets it in and when it's in he holds himself in her and moves fast. But they never seem to tie. He stays in her until he's done moving and then he will stand there frozen for a few seconds, then he will move away. So my question is, is it nessasary for them to tie? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if you are looking for help you will need to begin by explaining why you think you want to bring more cross bred puppies into the world.

I'm sorry but why would you breed a Chi with a Chi x Pom? As the breeder of Pomeranian's this really annoys me, especially after all I've gone through this week, or should I say all that my mum has had to go through. We used a Champion dog did everything that we should, travelled quite a distance twice to use him and ended up with hopefully one pup although it's still early days.
Unfortunately the answer is yes, more than likely your cross will have pups.
Well the woman with the chi/pom asked me if we could try to mate her with my pom....and my pom is inexperienced and I don't want him getting stressed so we decided to use the chihuahua. I do not usually mate with mixed breeds. My pom is registered and usually strictly only for high quality poms. Same with my chi but I did it this time because the woman had no one else to go to. I beleive in high quality poms and chi's just as much as you guys do but I did it this time for this woman. She already has homes for the pups with family members if she does indeed have pups.
perrodeagua I honestly do agree with you and I know it's hard now adays to find good quality poms....well at least in most parts of canada. This was a one time thing to do for a friend and she had someone else set up but couldn't get a hold of her so I was her only hope and it meant a lot to her.
Sorry guys
its possible to have puppies from a mating where the dog and bitch dont tie its called a slip mating . if the dogs have mated then its too late to be arguing over the ethics of crossbreeding, what you need to do now is focus on how you are going to find really good homes for these puppies when they come of age! it is your responsiblity as well as the stud dog owner to help find homes for them! by good homes i mean caring people who just want a pet not other people who want to use them for breeding as soon as there old enough

Of course its not too late, They can stop now and take the bitch for an injection to prevent fertilisation, there is no ethical reason to breed this litter it is contributing nothing to either of the breeds and there are a great many cross breeds already short of a home without producing more to sell.
oh I could never do that :-( thats like having an abortion :-( what is the point of mating the dogs and then giving the bitch an abortion? isnt it a better idea to find good homes for the puppies and call it a lesson learned?

Hundreds of thousands of unwanted cross breeds are put to sleep every year better never to have been born and felt pain, physical or emotional that to live a short, unwanted miserable life. These puppies might be wanted as cheap little handbag sized dogs but they deprive perhaps a slightly less cutesy little dog the chance of a home. Accidents happen and thats a shame but this is deliberate breeding and I can't see any justification for it.
Oh they already are spoken for if she has any and however many she has to good family members who want smaller breed dogs just can't afford the big bucks they cost now a days. We are both animal lovers and care very much for our dogs. I would never send an animal into a place that seems bad......I couldn't live with myself!!

Why will they cost any more or less than the pure bred puppies you have been breeding with yours. The mating should have been carried out after the same health checks, the veterinary costs of the welping/section are going to be the same and the rearing costs will be the same. Assuming like most breeders you make little or no profit how will these puppies be able to be sold for less?

It isn't too late the bitch can still ahve a mismating injection. Ideally she should be spayed.
why should she be spayed? what if the owner doesnt want her to be spayed?

Then they should be responsible and not have her mated. A crossbred bitch having puppies is only adding more uneceasary pups. I know for a fact that in the US and Canada most unwanted dogs are put to sleep in their thousands. If someone wants a crossbred dog or can't afford to by a puirebred there are thousands available without breeding more. Thes pups ar not needed to amintain the standard or preserve their breed.
what im trying to say though is, if the person who owns the crossbred bitch was so determined to breed her bitch, what makes you think that she will have her dog to the vets and get an injection and get the bitch spayed now that she has been mated?
Thats like someone trying for a baby and then going to the doctors to get the morning after pill
The person obviously wants puppies and if they have made up their mind theres not much you can do to stop them. The main thing to advise them on now is how to find good homes for the puppies when they are born, but as the OP says they have good homes waiting so lets hope thats true.

This is why it is so sad that the OP aided her in this unwise choice. People often change their mind after reflection so it is not too late to be sensible. If they realy want to breed then they shoudkldo it properly with a good example fo whichever breed purchased from a reputable breeder to guide and mentor them.

People are trying to help - maybe it isnt what you want to hear but it is correct. I cant see why anyone would purposly breed a x breed. You should have researched this before agreeing to it and you would have realised it is wrong. There are enough unwanted dogs out there without more adding to the numbers. There are plently of dogs in rescues looking for homes if people want smaller dogs without spending money.
