Thousands of them! 99% of them producing black, yellow or chocolate/liver. ;) :)

lol @ JG
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 15:12 UTC
you dont need to be sarcastic jeangenie, i was talking about the "silver" labradors, I am well aware there are lots of people who breed the other 3 colours in the UK. I will ask again incase I get a sensible answer, does anyone know if there are any breeders of the "silver" coloured labs in the Uk?
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 15:19 UTC
Bulldog Bash, JG was not being sarcastic, it was a little tongue in cheek humour.  There are no breeder of 'silver' Labs in the UK, it is not a recognised colour, It is poorly pigmented chocolate and the silver colouring is not recognised by the KC. These so called silver Labs, if registered, are registered as Chocolate.
The silvering is a serious fault.
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 15:21 UTC
ok maybe patronising is a better word?
I read the link before I posted and Im well aware that the colour is considered a fault but that wasnt what I asked, I asked if anyone in the Uk was breeding them. It appears not, thanks for your reply.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.06.05 15:22 UTC
Bulldog bash, according to my [replies] list, your post was in reply to my post about the mismark site. Naturally I assumed you also were referring to those. You only mentioned labs in general - not silver ones.

In answer to your newly clarified question - no, I believe that the silver is a purely US fad (so far ... ), and is a dilute chocolate - perhaps with similar health problems that other dilute colours can have.
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 15:23 UTC
Ok thanks for the reply, I think weve firmly established that no one is breding them in this country then. what health problems do dilute colours have? I have never heard of dilute colours having health problems please can you explain? thanks
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 15:38 UTC
Dilute colours have exactly the same health problems as true colours
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 17:02 UTC
thanks, thats what I thought so I was a bit surprised when jeangenie said that dilutes can have health problems, I would be interested to know more about this as Ive never heard that before.
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 17:09 UTC
Bulldog bash, do a search on HD OCD and PRA for starters, you will find that both JG and I have answered your question re health problems. Labradors have a serious problem with the above, and it matters not which colour.!!!
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 17:15 UTC
yes but my question is not about the hereditary problems which are allready present in the breed, I was asking what specific health issues do dilutes suffer from because jeangenie seemed to be suggesting that dilutes may suffer from problems related to their colour, or did I misunderstand what she said in her post quoted below?

"perhaps with similar health problems that other dilute colours can have. "

Julie V also replied to you with the following

>Colour Dilution Alopeacia

- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 17:23 UTC
yes I have heard of that before in dobes and rottweilers I beleive can suffer from it too, I have not heard of any others though, can anyone tell me what other health problems dilute colours can suffer from please? thanks :-)
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 17:29 UTC
I am sorry bulldog bash, but I dont know what other problems there may be.  Since there are no reputable breeders in the UK who would deliberately breed dilutes, any problems arising due may not be seen for some time.
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 17:32 UTC
thanks for your reply :-)
im going to do a google search and see what comes back
- By Isabel Date 28.06.05 17:34 UTC
I believe the Alopeacia that some of these dilutes suffer from leads to skin problems from dryness and exposure to sunlight can be problematic leading to a greatly increased risk of skin cancers, so the problems can be more than cosmetic.

These links might be of interest especially the last one as there a photo of three generations of very un lab like bitches on the page

- By Moonmaiden Date 28.06.05 17:52 UTC
You are welcome the three bitches look a lot like Weims to me
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 18:09 UTC
yes they do dont they. I cant say I have ever seen labradors which look like that, they definalty have a weim look about them
- By Moonmaiden Date 28.06.05 18:11 UTC
Thank goodness I thought it was just me ;) seeing things
- By bulldog bash Date 28.06.05 19:19 UTC
no they definately have a weimeraner look about them their ears seem larger and more dropped than a normal lab and Im sure the muzzle is longer too and more pointed at the end. Anyone else think so?
- By Julie V [gb] Date 28.06.05 16:02 UTC
There is a condition known as Colour Dilution Alopeacia.  Doesn't occur in all dilutes, Dobes I think are one of the breeds badly affected.

No these are mismarks and are a seriouse fault, we had a black pedigree lab born with the brindle marks on the legs,  he was also used on the local gamekeepers bitch but yet again we had another, my dog has never been used at stud again despite being asked over and over again, and yes I'am a bad person and shouldn't have let him mate a second time, boy have I learned so much more in the last few years.
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 15:22 UTC
Labs, dont kick yourself over this, it was a chance you took, and if the dog was worth breeding, it would have been a justified risk.  You now know that this mismark is thrown by him and have done the right thing in deciding not to use him again.  You are not a bad person, it happens ;)
- By labs [gb] Date 28.06.05 15:49 UTC
Thankyou for the kind words, he is such a fantastic worker. I wanted to get him done so as not to sress the poor boy out when my girls came into season, but so many people told me that he could loose his will to work and become lazy so didn't take the risk, What would your opinion be on this (sorry its a bit off topic) :)
- By kayc [gb] Date 28.06.05 16:03 UTC
Sorry Labs, cant really help on this one, I have never neutered my dogs, so cannot honestly comment on behaviour or attitude. I have noticed though, that all dogs on our shoot are intact, if thats any indication!
- By labs [gb] Date 28.06.05 16:27 UTC
Yer think I was best to keep him entire, he is so much better now than he was younger he would stop eating and howl even when be brought him in the house out of the way and he would loose so much weight, he doesn't do this now, must be as he's getting older!!!  :) :) Thankyou anyway.
