I felt i must post this as this is what i think most people on here mean about enjoying your puppy.Zanta my 14 week old berner/newfoundland decided to be quite clever thismorning by climbing on sofa which she knows she shouldnt do to get to the plate of cheese i leave on top of her crate for reward when she is good so i moved it further across, she waited a while and then jumped onto chair and climbed onto top of crate which i found quite funny and called my husband to come and look and of course he had to lift her off i cannot lift her anymore to heavy,i couldnt tell her off as these are things i find amusing and what having puppies are all about making you laugh so when they are naughty and biting you you during the day and you begin to feel frustrated you have something funny to look back on and it makes it all worthwhile.Of course i will not leave the cheese on top of crate anymore as i do not want her doing herself an injury.I hope you find my story will make you chuckle or is it just me.

Mmmm I know what you mean, though it wasn't very funny when my puppy chewed a hole in my cushions of my new garden swing the other morning! I only bought it last week. Managed to put all the stuffing back, but had no material to cover it with so had to tape it, very nice silver carpet tape which looks lovely with the green patterned cushions :) Apart from the cupboards being chewed, skirting boards wrecked, back door scratched and tiny bobbles of whats left of my dresser door knobs, yes she can be entertaining :D Mind you when she looks back at you with her big brown eyes you can't help but lover her.
Hi we have a few teethmarks in our leather three piece suite fairly new and she had been chewing the wooden knobs on our kitchen cupboards picked up a tip from someone and off this board about vics vapour rub just smear a little on surface you dont want them to chew Zanta only has to have a sniff of it and shes gone.

Awww!! Would love to see a pic of Zanta. We have a Newfie pup and the OH and I were just saying last night that the next pup will be a Bernese (albeit it several years time!!). So would love to see what a croos of the two looks like!! This story reminded me a lot of our pup. I was tidying up in the utility room and had placed a pile of freshly washed dog blankets and bedding on the floor while I cleaned the surfaces. Lola decided that she wanted to lie on a blanket at the bottom of the pile and set about trying to extract it. As the bedding was clean and dry and Lola was wet and grubby (which I am coming to realise is the perpetual Newfie state), I lifted the pile and set it on top of one of the kennels which sits right beside the steps to the utility room, beside the door. Undeterred, Lola climbs up on top of the kennel, locates the desired blanket and lies down for a kip right there on the kennel roof! Think I should rename her Snoopy...didn't he sleep on top of his kennel?
But I can totally understand where you're coming from...in spite of the nipping, chewing, weeing, wet footprints on my freshly mopped floor, fur in the butter tub, water bowl tipping etc, etc, we just love our little bear to pieces.
Hi if you would like to leave e.mail details i will of course send you some pics will have to wait till hubby around not sure how to send pics,we love our bundle of fur too she is becoming so loveable, and i know what you mean about muddy footprints and her coat picks up any twig or leaf in the garden sometimes im sweeping the floor 3 times a day but wouldnt be without her. She is i think going to have newfie coat all black on back white berner markings,i would recommend a berner that was our original intention at the end of summer but bitch that was to be used had an accident with the newfie as breeder breeds both and we decided to go for the combination as we like both dogs and had been to visit the berners in january one who had a litter of pups just to get an idea of size and meet breeder and mum and dad,we also met the dad of Zanta and know that both parents are hip scored heart tested etc.,and that they both have excellent tempraments. She has newfie web feet but her sister hasnt, but sister had back dew claws same as newfie but Zanta doesnt, good about web feet though we own a cruiser on our local river so she should have lots of fun.(if you are interested Zanta is swahili for beutiful girl) i think its very appropriate but i am biased.

She sounds absolutely gorgeous and what a beautiful name too! I will PM you with my e-mail address. We looked for a Newfie pup for ages but they are so scarce!! We had actually pretty much given up and we got our other dog (Lab X Chow) last August. He was 6 months old at the time and hadn't had the best start in life but has more than made up for it now. He is much loved and has developed into a fantastic and stunning dog! Then, in May, fate intervened and I found out about our little Newfie girl. The litter was small, only three puppies (plus one stillborn) two of which were brown and one black (Black Mum, Brown Dad) and, like yours we were able to spend time with the puppies and parents and we saw what wonderful temperaments they had. Thankfully, we didn't have to choose between pups as we wanted a girl and there only was one. And colour wasn't important to us as we love all the colours equally. My OH's parents have a lot of land and we plan to move there in the future so we can have lots more dogs. The OH has already pinpointed where he is going to put a lake in so we can have a black and a landseer too, as well as a Bernese and maybe a Leonberger!!! You're lucky that Zanta has the Newfie love of water...our friends have a a Bernese and he will just about get his feet wet!! Lola has already had her first swim and seems to prefer being wet to being dry. LOL. She sits in the water bowls but it's becoming a bit of a squeeze as she's growing fast. They have 3 washing-up bowls of water at all times (hold more water and harder to tip ...but not impossible) and changing drinking bowls is an endless task in our house as, as soon as a fresh one is down, Lola has a drink then climbs in. Shay point blank refuses to drink Lola's bath water (understandably) so another fresh one has to go down and so on...hoping this will stop when she's too big to get in the bowls. We bought a kids paddling pool for her to play in too and she loves it. I guess muddy paw prints are a fact of life from here on in...
I was thinking of getting a small paddling pool so she can go in when really hot if she likes, she hasnt actually been swimming yet as she has been on the boat but not allowed her to try river yet as only 14 wks old,but when we went for walk along towpath sunday she seemed quite interested on what might be on the other side of the bank. I daresay she will of been swimmimg before summers out, we dont seem to have to much trouble with her emptying her water bowl or sitting in it i bet that looks really cute although messy but as you say part of life from now on,i read on a website somewhere dont have a newfie if you are houseproud im not houseproud but i now know what they mean, but its worth it.

The little paddling pool we bought was from Argos. Its shell shaped, made of blue plastic and comes in 2 halves (I think one half is supposed to be used as a sand pit). It only cost about £11-£12 but Lola has great fun in it. We throw toys in and she fetches them out again. She does seem to use it to cool down in as she'll just get in there and sit for a few minutes. We thought our other dog might use it for this purpose too as he also loves water but he just looks at her like she's mad! We put blocks of ice or ice cubes in the water bowls too when it's warm like this but Lola fishes them out and hides them around the house so that sometine later, we find little pools of melted ice all over the place. Luckily, I'm not houseproud either but she does create so much extra work!
We took Lola to a little stream which is just deep enough for her to swim in at the minute but not so deep that we couldn't paddle in and fish her out if she was struggling. The water is nice and clear and seems quite clean. We weren't expecting her to swim so soon but she just got straight in and got on with it. I guess it really is Newfie instinct as our other dog was about 8 months old before he plucked up the courage to do anything more than just paddle.
That sounds like a good idea taking her to a little stream to begin with,if i have done it right i have replied to your message on my message board with my e.mail details for pics.

Got your PM, thanks.

Leonbergers love the water too! :) Molly won't wait till the pools full before she's in splashing about. My mate's got one of those pools only hers' is a boat shape. Took her to Barton under needwood a month back and she just went straight in the lake, no time wasting, retreiving underwater :) Going again this sunday, saw some newfies there last time, further up the other end, perhaps you could find out from the breed club when they will be there next and go along, or find one closer to you you will enjoy it.

Will try the vic, see if it works :)

Hi Missie
Ooh, glad to hear that Leonbergers like water too...I've only recently discovered the breed and haven't met one in the flesh yet but look like beautiful dogs. What are they like as pets?
OH says I'm just a big dog fanantic as he had to stop me 'stalking' a man with a Great Dane whilst we were out walking last night!! I used to do this to every Newfie owner we saw, which weren't many as they're rare as rocking horse poo where I live. Would love to find a club like the one you mentioned but I live in N. Ireland and haven't been able to find any. Maybe I should start one!! :-)

I've got two and they are both lovely girls, my mates got four 3 girls 1 boy. They love EVERYONE and always want to be fussed and loved, like most breeds I expect. Because of their weight and size you have to be careful around small children. They love exercise, playing and cuddles :)
All the ones I have met at shows etc seem very friendly.
Now I've got one nudging me cos its her tea-time, honest I'm sure they have timers in their tummies :D
