Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Stripe in tail
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 27.06.05 10:38 UTC
hi i am new to showing i have started my pup at ring craft she is 13 weeks. She is a fawn pug and i feel a very nice standard. The only thing bothering me is she has a black stripe running across her tail will this be to her dissadvantage will the judges consider this unfavourable?
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 27.06.05 19:59 UTC
does anyone know if this will be a problem
- By Blue Date 27.06.05 20:49 UTC
Have you read the breed standard? I think it clearly says it in there and I don't know a single thing about a pug.   Do you not breed them? maybe I have it wrong.

Hi luvapug
Black stripe on tail is not a problem with showing our pugs have them in varying degrees and do fine in the ring

Hi thanks for your reply Baz and blue yes i do breed them but as i said i am new to showing so was'nt sure about the stripe for showing,

luvapug, when you say black stripe running across her tail what excatly do you mean? does it look like its been dipped in ink,or is the stripe from her shoulders running along her back to her tail?

But it's vital that a breeder only breeds from top-quality animals. Show-ring faults are also breeding faults - surely you're aware of this? You need to know your breed's standard inside out and back-to-front before you consider breeding.

That's exactly why we show dogs luvapug.  Not to say that my dog is better than yours, but to say that my dog is good enough quality to be bred from, and is a good respresentitive of the breed.

reply to jeangenie and Val, this pup i am talking about was not breed by me and i am not considering breeding her. I brought her purely to show, when i brought her she did'nt have hardly any black stripe there and i thought this wouuld probably grow out. It has instead got darker. Other than this she is a very good standard for a pug. I have read the kennel standard and it says nothing about colour in the tail. I have since learnt this is not a problem and other pug owners have shown very successfully with a stripe in the tail. When i brought her i didnt think this would be a problem but was interested to know others opion about it.

But luvapug, in your reply to blue you said that yes, you do breed them. If you know enough about them to breed them, you'll know about the breed faults anyway, won't you?
- By Loganberry [gb] Date 28.06.05 08:47 UTC
i didnt think this was a fault then on reading posts on here about showing it made me wonder thats all, i now am sure this is not a fault

I know little about Pugs, but reading the breed standard, it would appear to me that the trace, which should be as black as possible, should extend from the head to the tail, and not just be a stripe on the tail??  I would be tempted to ask the breeder if it will darken on maturity.
If this puppy is show quality, then she would be exactly the one to be thinking about breeding from.

she has the correct trace and as i said ive spoken to a few other people who breed and show pugs and they assure me this wont be a problem or a fault

the reason i dont want to breed her is i want to consentrate on the show side of the dog world more in the future, i may consider breeding her in a couple of years if all is well, but as you know showing takes up a lot of time and breeding more so

Luvapug,

The breed standard clearly does cover this,

Here is a line taken from the breed standard   "(black line extending from occiput to twist) "

Do you know where and what the Occiput is and the twist is?    Top of the skull to the tail

I am not going to have a go at you honestly.. I am plesently pleased to at least hear you are going to start showing and taking a stronger interest in what you actually are producing. It may be late but better late than never :-))

We see so many and loads just now for some reason of people breeding animals without the slightest idea what or how good a quality of dog it is or any understanding at all about the breed in general .I do hope you endorse all your puppies so that they cannot be bred from until their quality can be assessed. This is the best and most honest way of rectifing a deed already done.   Forget breeding anymore just now, show for a few years, get involved with the breed club, attend some seminars and get an understanding of the breed.

There is nothing more rewarding for a breeder to see a decent quality litter in the whelp box that they would be proud to say the breed and actually know they are decent quality.  If you are going to do a job do it right. :-)

Nobody can say something is a " decent standard" unless they actually understand the standard :-)

yes thank you Blue but the stripe is not in her trace it is a ring around her tail but i am no longer concerned as i said earlier i have been assured this is fine thanks for your reply

most fawn pugs have black tipped hairs /stripe in their tails if you unroll it. my last champion bitch did, it is not considered a fault.
