In laymans terms could someone explain the seriousness of this in a young dog and the prognosis. the dog in question was diagnosed a week after a booster vaccination, started coughing, given antibiotics. Another week later, collapsed whilst out running. Seen by specialist and diagnosed. Had a quick search but my breed is none of the ones this seems to be found in and no family history. Is the prognosis always poor?
Could the vaccine have brought it on.

Unfortunately the prognosis is poor.  Its a big killer in certain breeds, particularly Dobermanns.  What breed is your dog?  You can control the symptoms for a while, but not for long, I had a 5yr old Dobe diagnosed and he had died within 6 months.  So sorry your dog has this.

I'd imagine that in a young dog the progonsis would sadly be worse :( but just to let you know I've had a Golden with this, and he lived for 3 happy years on medication. He needed his medication adjusted from time to time and went for at least monthly vet check ups, sometimes more frequently, but during these years he had a good life and enjoyed every moment of it. He was 11 when he was put to sleep.
