My 12 week old puppy had her second vaccination yesterday please could some one advise how long i should wait before taking her out.  Thanks
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 08:33 UTC
I have a 17 week old puppy and after we got his second vaccination done, the vet told us to wait 2 weeks before taking him out for a walk. (obviously we still took him out to get socialised, just not on the ground) I couldnt wait to take him on his first walk!! I bet you are the same! ;-) Did your vet not say how long you had to wait??
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 24.06.05 08:41 UTC
I would say get her out a.s.a.p.  Any health risks would be minimal compared to the benefits of good socialisation.
Enjoy  :)

As I've said before, mine always walk out of the surgery, after their 2nd vaccs. No further quarantine at all.

I stupidly forgot to ask the vet but she never said anything about keeping her in.  I phoned the vets this morning and spoke to the receptionist and she said to wait a week but i'm sure i never had to do this with my other dog!!!
- By janeandkai [gb] Date 24.06.05 09:41 UTC
i was told by my vet to wait 5 days after injection, but i suppose it depends on the area you live in as to the possible risks of infection. be guided by them as they treat the infections so have a good idea of the risks if any :-) just my opinion.

MY PUPPIES 15WEEKS OLD AND OUR VET ADVISED TO WAIT A WEEK TO TAKE HIM OUT. WHICH I DID
- By becks [gb] Date 24.06.05 09:43 UTC
When I got my pup six years ago, the vet said nothing about keeping him in afterwards. So he walked right out after his second jab. He's still alive and well, all be it quite mad but I don't think that was because I took him out early. He's always been a little nutter. :D
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 09:47 UTC
I think if Vets give you guidelines then you should stick to them. They are the qualified professionals.
- By Kay [gb] Date 24.06.05 09:52 UTC
Thanks for your advice everyone, i will keep her in for another week i think, better to be safe than sorry.
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 09:58 UTC
Couldnt agree more Kay anyway with this hot weather they shouldnt be walked in the day anyway i normally leave it until about 10 in the evening.
What puppy have you got ?
- By Kay [gb] Date 24.06.05 10:06 UTC
Hi, she's a staffordshire bull terrier, cute but a real little terror.  Don't worry i definitely wont be taking her out during the day.  My other dog also a staffy isn't coping well with the heat at all, even at 11 o'clock at night he's still panting so it's just short walks for him before bed at the moment.
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 10:09 UTC
Arrrr so cute i have a little Bulldog he doesnt cope very well with all this heat
- By Kay [gb] Date 24.06.05 10:31 UTC
My other dog is 1 but he still acts like a puppy, he is so excited with the new puppy that he constantly runs round after her and wont sit still.  Even when we put them in seperate rooms to calm down and keep cool they just whine for each other and get themselves all hot and bothered.  How old is your bulldog?
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 10:46 UTC
Hes 15 weeks today
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 10:48 UTC
Awww i bet your puppy is georgous!! I would love to see pics! :-) i have a Mastiff puppy who is 2 weeks older than yours! :-)
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 10:54 UTC
ohhh I LOVE mastiffs they are so cute
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 24.06.05 10:54 UTC
Blind faith in vets (or any other professionals come to that) is not something I'd recommend.  Listen to what they say by all means but remember they are fallible.  Sometimes trusting your own instinct and doing some research yourself can have better outcomes.
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 11:00 UTC
I agree Tyby. When i first took my Mastiff to the vets they had never seen one before and were asking ME all the questions!!! I thought I was supposed to be the one asking the questions! :D They have done a bit of research now and are a little better. But with no practical experience, i am still very careful with the advise they give ;-)
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 11:12 UTC
Being careful with advise is a good thing but if you follow there advice in this instince it isnt going to hurt them by staying in for a week
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 11:14 UTC
Thats what i thought with mine, i didnt take him for a walk for the 2 weeks after, as they suggested. I didnt think it was worth the risk :-)
- By Keithf [in] Date 24.06.05 11:23 UTC
The data sheet of the vaccine states that full immunity may not be achieved for up to 14 days after treatment.

You need to make your own call on the balance between socialistion and the risks of infection in your area.
- By Kay [gb] Date 24.06.05 11:53 UTC
I have another dog so she isn't totally isolated from other dogs and my parents have a labrador who she see's so she is getting some socialisation.  I think i'll take her for a carry when i take my other dog for a walk, do you think this would be ok?   That way she will get used to the outdoors and cars etc.
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 11:58 UTC
Yes, i think that would be a good idea. Before i took my puppy out for walks, he went everywhere with us. Out in the car and being carried everywhere else. It did him the world of good, getting him used to lots of different noises, smells and meeting loads of new people! It is very important to socialise at this age, even before they can go out for walks. :D
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 12:55 UTC
Yes i did that with my dog too. We took him everywhere (and we still do) and after his 1st vac's even took him to a Puppy Socialisation class at our vets.
- By Blues mum Date 24.06.05 13:20 UTC
I took my pup for a trip round the post office in my arms 2 weeks ago, now i can just about lift him up! lol
Also i asked my vet what should i do if his too heavy to carry in the vets when he goes for his 2nd vac, she said well, if he has to walk in then theres nothing you can do really, was a bit worried about that! thought they might of had a dog trolley or something lol
- By Kay [gb] Date 24.06.05 13:49 UTC
Wow, what sort of dog do you have???  Luckily my puppy's still tiny so she's easy to carry round only bad thing is she's a little wriggler.
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 13:51 UTC
MY PUPS 15WKS NOW AND WEIGHS NEARLY 2 STONE BUT THE VET AND NURSE SAID THIS IS PERFECT WEIGHT. AND HE STILL HAS HIS WAIST
- By mackleback Date 24.06.05 14:03 UTC
Your lucky! :-) My puppy weighs almost 4 stone!!!!! He gets a weight check on Tuesday so i will know his exact weight then. I hope i dont have to carry him for any reason!!!! I only just manage to lift him to put him in the boot!! (and ONLY just!!) :D
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 14:23 UTC

- By Isabel Date 24.06.05 14:29 UTC
There is a balance between risk of disease and benefits of socialisation but your vet is probably your best guide to quantify at least the risk part as they will have an up to date knowledge of any occurances in his area.  Blind faith in vets is probably a little better that blind faith in internet aquintances who do not even live in your area ;)  The benefits of socialisation will also vary by breed, my first cocker spaniel, for instance, lived entirely on her own in her breeder's outside kennels from the age of 8 to 12 weeks, her only contact with other dogs being sight of them across a yard and yet she had the most laid back friendly attitude of any dog I have owned.  Further guidance on the importance of socialisation for you chosen breed can be obtained from your breeder.  Those two pieces of information would, I believe, be the best assistance if you are not happy just to go with the vets recommendations and make up your own mind.
- By BULLDOGOWNER [eu] Date 24.06.05 14:35 UTC
Totally agree Isabel. My vet told me not to walk my dog for 1 weeks after his 2nd vac's and i totally listened to his advice and followed it i didnt even dream of questioning it or asking for a 2nd opinion, as his advice was given to me for a reason.
- By Blues mum Date 24.06.05 14:48 UTC
