Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 2 pups together - help please!!
- By Tenno [gb] Date 23.06.05 11:51 UTC
We kept 2 pups from our girls littler (NOT a good idea I know!!). We was keeping just 1 but the other one had a bad leg so we kept him as well rather than passing a problem on to a new owner.

They are 10wks old now & all the other pups have gone to their new homes. The 2 we are keeping are still together all the time in a large puppy pen - would this be better -

Put both pups in seperate crates next to each other & then after a couple of weeks put somthing between the crates so they cant see each other?

Or would they be ok together?

We keep them on their own a few times a day, both with different people - & plan to walk the seperatly as well as together when they are older.

So any tips please?

Thankyou

Jo

Plenty of play training separately. Do as much as you can with them on their own and make sure you keep up with individual activities on a daily basis for as long as you possibly can. It will be a hassle for a while but will benefit you in the long term. It is possible to have 2 from the same litter and not have problems - my friend did it with 2 Tervs but it was very hard work and she swore never again but they have turned out ok and are nice dogs now.

Good luck :-)

Aaaaaw, you have a friend with Tervs   Rare indeed - get a Belgian you have to be armed with a list of excuses and find inventive ways of apologising to total strangers - friends are thin on the ground as a rule :D :P You have to tell all - pm me if you like ;)

Hiya

We kept two sisters from our litter, they are almost 13 weeks old now. They have seperate cages at night and we never hear a peep out of them unless it's for the loo. I do allow them some playtime with each other as I feel this is an important time for them to decide the pecking order. I am really lucky as I have 3 different ringcrafts within 15 mins of me so I plan to take them to classes on their own. I feel this gives them one to one that they wouldn't get if we took them together. We also make a point of having only one out at a time for a wee while. I don't know if what I am doing is right, but it seems to be working for me. Now if we could only crack the toilet training :D :D It's a very slow process.

omg two staffs together lol beware the playfightin will be crazy!!! We had two for a short time as we looked after one for a freind who couldn't keep her (long story blah blah) and although there was 12 months between them they were a nightmare!!! They wound eachother up and encouraged eachother to be naughty ie eating things they shouldn't like the sofa and my shoes lol and they would run the lenght of the house head to head going through anything that got in their way. So my advice would be to definately keep them seperately when you can't supervise them.

Thanx - the play fighting is going to be hard I can tell that allready!!!!

Having the pups has made the mum very naughty though!  running off with shoes, digging up plants etc, that she has not done for a couple of years.

I will try & keep them apart a bit more but still allowing them to play together somtimes.

My hubby is part way through building a large kennel (well a steel reinforced shed!) & large run to be used occassionaly from a young age.
Allthough when I go out it is usually only for an hour or so unless I go to a show (when other family are home) There has been times when I have gone out all day when relitives etc are ill & I think this would give them more space when unsupervised.

I have allways took the mum with me.

Thanx for the tips

Jo

The other thing I would do is teach them a stop playing command. I do this with all my dogs so I can control the madness and remind them who is in charge and therefore who decides when play does or does not happen. (Very handy in the middle of an important phone call, etc) I should think this sort of control is a thousand times more essential with two puppies. :-)

We have 2 English Bull Terrier puppies, now nearly 4 months old, both from the same litter, and they get on perfectly.

They have a cage each and we just put a towel/blanket on-top and over the side of the cage that faces each other so that when they are seperated they don't pine and bark at each other. if they can see each other then they want to play! We train them seperately but walk them together, they follow what each other does so it makes walks easier since they both go in the same direction and tend to get less distracted when they have each other!

As long as they have some where seperate to sleep and rest they will be fine!

Good luck.
