Has anybody out there got greyhounds??  Loads of retired ones need rehoming.  Was thinking about getting one - what are they like with children??

They are fantastic dogs, many of them are great with children, there is currently an ex racer at my training class and a 12 year old girl takes her and is coming along lovely.  They love nothing more than loads of love and a big comfy bed to lay on all day LOL!  I don't have a greyhound but I know many people who do and can't praise them enough.  Here is a site that is local to me, gives you info and they can probably help you find a rescue cetre close to you:

Good luck with it, I don't have a bad word about the breed :)

<I don't have a bad word about the breed>

They can have problems with cats & small furry animals depending on how much prey drive they have I remember a couple of ex racers killing any cat they could reach & the ended up having to be muzzled when out, on the other hand I know of five ex racers who live with & act as beds for hald a dozen Norwegian Forest Cats(mind you NFC are a tad bigger than the average moggie)

Yes I forgot to mention that, however when you take a dog on from the rescue they will be able to tell you if the dog is suitable with cats or small dogs etc, many of them are however some do have to be muzzled on a walk, I would not really say its a bad thing - just need to take the correct precautions - select the right dog for you :)

I have met many greyhounds over the past 7 months and have not come across one of them has to be muzzled when out, I would agree that many of them do not like cats but have yet to come across one that has a problem with small dogs, mine has always been fine with small dogs but as he is rarely let off the lead because they do have a tendancy to keep running and go deaf when you are calling them back so he has never been in a position to chase something that is running away. this is the only precaution I take with mine - not letting him off the lead unless in a safe inclosed area.

I used to be a volunteer dog walker for a greyhound charity and they are a lovely breed. It is a real joy to take them out as they just love running and take immense enjoyment from the outdoors, but they actually run to the point of exhaustion and then need a good nap. They are also incredibly docile and gentle. I think they are a fantsatic breed, I really do. Why don;t you spend a few days as a volunteer with greyhound rescue as a walker, and then you will be able to assess for yourself how well a greyhound would  fit in with your routine and lifestyle. It only takes a few hours out of your day, and would be worth it if it helped you to come to a decision.

My retired greyhound is absolutlely wonderful, we have had him for about 7 months now and he has settled in fantasticaly. He is absolutly brilliant with my two girls who are 2 and 6 and as another poster said they are docile and very loving, the longer we have him the more he comes out of his shell and has learnt how to play with us, he is so loyal and is my shadow whever I go but must admit he is usually on the look out for any food. :) We also have another dog and a cat and he has settled in really well with both and usually ignores the cat (but it is true some greyhounds do go after cats). His favourite thing to do is sleep though he does like his walks, my rescue advised me to not let him off his lead unless he is in an enlosed safe area and this is what we do.

I cannot recommend them enough and there are so many needing good home,

Me and my OH are currently looking after his fathers greyhound, they got her from a rescue centre a few years ago and she is the most placid dog I have ever come across.  She doesn-t chase any animals, she doesn-t bother with them at all, she tries to stay away from them in fact.
