Hiya,
My bitch should of finished her moult by now, and her coat looks
in good condition, yet she seems to have different colours
appearing over the coat. What can I give her to improve her
coat, and shampoo. Should I be adding anything extra to her
diet to help. She is A Weimaraner so she has a short coat.
Is it true that a raw egg will help added to her feed?

Hi
Nutkin, where are the patches if they appear on her flanks she could indeed have a thyroid or hormone problem, you could maybe speak to the breeder to see if they have noticed anything similar in their dogs, it could just be the breeding ?
Dawn.

Hiya, I will get her tested for thyroid problem as I understand
it is in the breed. But the spots are like leapord spots, black
dark ones. I have never seen it before, I am quite baffled by
this. Its not just one spot but at least twelve all over the body
not just in one place. I will also try evening primrose oil.
She did have a false pregnancy and I never thought about it
being hormonal. What should I do about that?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I took my girl to the vets today. He said that she could
not have thyroid problems as she was too young.
He felt it was hormonal. I asked him if their was anything
she could be given and he said he could easily flog me
something but it would not work. His best advice was
she will get better in two to three months. This is not
a lot of help to me as I have two shows booked for her
that I can not enter now. Has anyone got any ideas
on something that I could add to the feed to help her
get back into conditon. She is fed a high protein food
Purina Performance. HELP!!!

Hmm, I don't think you can ever be too young to have a thyroid problem :-( I think you may need to ask your vet about 'humouring' you and testing anyway...it is a simple blood test, that needs sending to a specalist lab....often syptoms are hard to pinpoint

Ps Try evening primrose oil anyway, it really does help coats

Hi Nutkin.... these spots..... does it look like your girl has been rained on ???

Sort of Lynn, they are dark and several, black spots.
The skin underneath is not discoloured at all.
She is now moulting again today. I have to say
she looks aweful. Help appreciated!!!

Hi Nutkin, she is coating... dont worry... lots of weimys get the spots, it happens when they are moulting and I know one lady who brushed and brushed and washed and tried to get rid of the 'spots' and succeeded in leaving her dog with a bald patch..... so leave well alone and she will come thru it in a couple of weeks..... dont worry its normal!

Lynn

Hope to see you in RB later! :)

You can speed up the process of moulting by bathing her in Liquid Paraffin. NOT a good idea to do it before a show ;-)

It's a bit messy but works. Basically get a pair of rubber gloves and rub the LP into her dry coat, you will then need to wash it out about 3 or 4 times with your usual shampoo. As I say it can be a bit messy but you'll see loads of dead hair coming out. You may need to bath her again using her usual shampoo prior to a show just to make sure it is definately all out and her coat doesn't feel greasy. I know loads of folk who do this and it's always worked for them too.

HTH :-)

Thanks to Lynn and Claire B. Two Weimy owners
I really appreciate your help. I have been really
worrying myself to death wondering what has happened.
As I have not seen it before. Poor dog has been to
vets, had primrose oil in her lunch today and star flower
oil, poor girl is so greased up she will slip out of her
basket tonight.
Tried R.B. Lynn. No luck!

Lynn and Claire

Her coat is looking better, but going very dark.
She has a show on Saturday, I cant make my
mind up if I should enter her or not.
I have just bought some homeopathic products
to help. But I can see an improvement.

my bitch was diagnosed with thyroid at about 8 months-so i think you need to have words with your vet---its not common but happens!!
- By nutkin [gb] Date 14.06.02 20:04 UTC
I am amazed my vet just dismissed me saying that a
dog will not have thyroid as it is too young. Mine
is 16 months. Especially if yours is only 8 months.
However her coat problem is only the colour of her
coat, no dark skin, (no bald patches, which is the symptoms of
thryoid). I had a good read up on this condition after
you posted it. My girls coat is so much better, the
old coat has just about gone, she is darker all over
and looks in perfect health. I am taking her to a show
tomorrow. I had never seen it in a Weim before, that
is why I started to panic. However after talking to
Lynn she reasured me what was happening. Thank
goodness for sites like this. Anyway thank you for your
comments. I really appreciated it.
Nutkin.

Nutkin my bitch was quite pale as a youngster but after her first season and losing her puppy coat she came in much darker. Now when I compare her to my young male she is much darker than he is. I'll watch to see if his coat changes much. I have seen a few dogs in the ring who look very patchy as they are losing their coat. It hasn't stopped them winning and I noticed in the critiques the judge will sometimes say "out of coat at the moment".

Good Luck for tomorrow I take it you are not coming up to Border Union :-)

Thanks Claire,
We went to Essex County Show, a poor turn out
for Weimaraners.
Chelsea got first in junior and post grad and
reserve best in breed. Woody got best puppy.
So we were happy even though a poor turn out.
