Hi All,
I have a small Dilema, my Basset male firstly has a propblem with sharing food with my Bithces. He attacks the youngest one everyday without fail over the food. Last night he cut her face with his claw or teeth, not sure which. How can I stop his aggression?
Also the next problem is I take him out of the Kennels and into the kitchen when one is in season and it seems he gets lonely, barks and howls. I think he needs a playmate. But I want one he will get on with and that won't bark very much.
ANY IDEAS ON BOTH SUBJECTS?

Firstly I would remove him from the area when your bitches are trying to enjoy their dinners.
On the second query you could bring one of the bitches that isn't in season into the house too for company but it will not stop him howling if one is in season :) Another male companion, of course, would make a chorus of two :D
Can you try and feed them seperately? I had a problem at feeding time with 2 dogs. One was so laid back he didn't care if Sam was there, but the other way round caused Sam to bite my other dog.
Once we trained them , that Barnie ate first, then Sam, there was harmony.
Give that a try but you do have to be there to oversea that the one waiting does not push in.

The feeding problem can be easily solved by feeding seperately. The howling and barking is not that he is lonely, but that he knows there is a bitch in season outside!! The only way to solve that is to keep him as far away as possible because the scent of a bitch in season travels A LONG WAY!! Many homes without suitable facilities will send their dog to kennels for the critical 2 weeks that their bitch is in season. That's why most breeders travel to stud dogs rather than keep both dogs and bitches on their premises, which also means that they can use the most suitable dog for each bitch rather than the nearest one.
