Topic Dog Boards / General / Previous dogs names - do you err?

Do you sometimes find yurself calling your present dog your "old/previous" dogs name, even occasionaly regardless of the sex? And if so do you think its because what they are doing/the situation reminds you of the old dog, or is it just your mind wandering back over the years?

I ask because the two I have now are Sal and Tess (as most of you know) and both bitches.
Well my previous two Stafford bitches have been called Gypsy, one called almost always Gyp, as we had a dog too Sam and Gyp (Sam and Gyp rolled off the tongue better) After we lost them we got Gypsy, who was also occasionaly called Gyp.
We called it two bitches running because we could not stop calling the new pup Gyp/Gypsy. So we decided to call it her too.

Occasionaly -the two now will be called either Gyp or Sam.

In a lot of ways its nice, you know what they say you are "not gone if someone remembers your name"
Just wondered if other had done it or used the same name for two different dogs? And they don''t mind at all.

My ex dog sitters, brother and sister in law always had two Irish Setters which they replaced when one died but they always had the same two names for the dogs, so when one died they replaced it with another and kept the same name - I personally dont think its right and couldnt do it, to me there will only ever be one Fagan and Alfie - thank god :D :D

My first dog of another breed was called Saga, and ideal name ofr a scandinavian dog, but I could never re-use a pet name.

Same here - I'm forever mixing up my OH's name and that of my youngest dog :o

I could never re-use pet names, to me they are all unique individuals :)

I call all my dogs in an order which never changes. 6 months after losing Megan I was still calling her name 1st as the Alpha, it took a long time to drop it. I still very occassionally call it.  I am planning to incorporate Megan into the KC reg of a bitch from my next litter in memory of her, but I could never use it as a pet or call name. Each dog is an individual and the name is unique to them. However, I do get mixed up with Ellie and Tia at the moment, they are so similar that I look at the height to distingquish them (Ellie being 1/2inch shorter)

Up until the end of April this year, I had 3 dogs and then we lost Ella. :(

Like Kay, although I only had 3, I used to call them in order, with alpha bitch (Ella) being the first, followed by Murfee and then Callia. Even though it's not quite 2 months yet, whenever I call them for dinner I have to think before I call, if I'm tired or emotional (very often these days  ) I automatically call all three and promptly burst into tears :(

Before we had Ella, we used to have a GSD called Jodie and because Ella looked so much like Jodie (total coincidence) and had similar mannerisms, OH used to called Ella, Jodie, all the time and I used to accuse him of going senile :P I Can't really talk now........can I?

My late grandmother always used to have minature poodles and yep, she always called them Sonny!! We had Sonny 1, 2 and 3

Well, Remy is my first male dog so he's not a problem - and Opi, well, Opi is named after - yes, you guessed it - Opie!  opie was a springer X irish water spaniel, very different to Opi, we gave Opi the name as a memory to Opie (anyone confused yet? :D).  So I can't get it wrong, but there won't be another Opi or Opie now I don't think!  The only problem I have now is getting the dogs I have mixed up - Opi and Tia look very much alike (my dad still has trouble telling them apart), and if one does something they shouldn't and dashes off, sometimes I find myself telling off the wrong dog!!

I mix the kids names up so the dogs all get jumbled up.

My aunt always calls her labs Judy she has now had 5 of them all with the same name.

We ALWAYS get our 3 mixed up, they seem to cope ok tho :D

I think its hard when animals are similiar, all of our 3 are very different, despite Chloe and Kayla being aunty and niece......and my dad often goes through all the female names in our house before he gets to me and my mam has been known to shout one of the girls when she really ment me....thanks mam :P I'd be offended if the girls weren't so pretty :D

I also still call one of my rats, who is called Izzy, Ronnie because he looks so similiar to Ron who died last August :( The only difference is that Izzy has a tiny white dot on his forehead and is not as friendly as Ronnie was.....I call his name then realise and have to apologise to him.

I could never give a number of dogs the same name, they are such individuals, I've probably owned about 25 different animals and they've all had different names..that's half the fun of a new animal is thinking of a name that suits, mind you all the dogs names were already decided on weeks before we actually had them at home, maybe lucky that they suited them!!

Emily :)
