my dogs are house trained and very rarely have an accident in doors, they have never wee'd in their beds, but for some strange reason i have brought them a new large suede effect bed that they can all fit in together, and they keep weeing in it. Every time i wash it again they go straight to it and wee on it why?

Because each dog is trying to mark it as their proprerty/territory??

so why dont they wee in their other beds which they also share?

Maybe because it is new, and they want to "mark" it as their own.

ive just washed it for about the 5th time in a week so i think i'll just give it away to someone, they obviously are going to keep doing this, wouldnt mind but it cost me £50, thought they would like it :(

Perhaps because this is 'new' and each is trying to stake a claim to it. territorial marking is quite common on new items introduced into a multi-dog household.  #

Children actually do similar things with new toys, dolls etc. They write their name in a book, they mark toys with crayons, while we often think this is a form of destruction, it seems that it is a territorial marking of their claims to a particular item.

so should i just keep washing it and hope they grow tired of weeing in it??

maybe you could put a blanket of something that they already use and that smells like them. That might stop them doing it. Hopefully ;-)

Next time, don't wash it, just put it in the sun to dry out and let them use it outside for a day or two. Then wash it and let it dry in the sun again for a day or two for them to lie on. That may stop the problem. Good Luck.

No, because it now has the 'right' smell - don't confuse marking with urination ;)

oh i see, :-) I thought that they might be able to tell that they had done a wee there before and then think it was ok to do it again.

I agree I think its a kind of territory thing.  If I get anything new in the house (e.g. coffee table or footstool or anything), the dog will lift his leg at it.  Nine times out of ten its just drops and doesn't mark the furniture but he has to do it.  Once done, he never does it again and he is 100% clean in the house. Just a way of him saying its part of his surroundings I suppose. He doesn't share though, so maybe each of your dogs is trying to lay a claim to the new bed?
