Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / getting used to dogmatic

After 4 months of "walking on a loose lead" training, Luke does quite well but is still inclined to suddenly lunge at cats, black plastic bags etc, and I am afraid that one day he will pull me over. So, I searched the cupboard for the dogmatic abandoned there last August, 'cos he wouldn't accept it at all. We spent a week putting it on for meals, treats etc & then taking it off. Then last week I started using it for walks. He hates it when we first go out, and usually will try to paw it off 3 - 4 times in the first 10 minutes. Then we arrive at the local park, I remove it and he has a really good run around chasing his ball. On the return journey he's fine with it and doesn't attempt to paw it off unil he's back in the house, so now I remove it as soon as we're in the porch.
However I do find the initial pawing distressing, also when we're first out he is pulling into the dogmatic, and it's difficult to have the lead loose as he's then more inclined to paw and fuss. Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks.

Just the same today - fuss and pawing on outward journey, OK when head collar back on for return home after the park. Am I being unkind or just firm in persevering with this?

Will he carry a ball/toy? If he has something in his mouth he may not worry so much about it. You have to weigh up the pros and cons. As long as the Dogmatic isn't causing him to hurt himself, i.e. he is not scratching himself trying to get it off then it shouldn't be too much of a problem and is better than him pulling into the road and getting squished! Alternatively you could try a different type of headcollar. All of mine flip out with any of the other types but accept a Gencon Gentle Controller with no problem.

HTH :-)
