Hiya :)
Wondering if any of you can help me at all. I've set up broadband today with no problems... apart from that my connection keep redialing all the time - really annoying when you're in the middle of something (like typing this!). I've been into my Internet Options and made sure that the 'idle' time is increased (to an hour!), but that hasn't worked. I've also altered it to:  "consider idle if only 1% of connection speed". Again, not worked. Can any of you computer buffs help little old me? :D  .......pleeease? ;)

Which broadband have you got?
Broadband should be connected 24/7 so no need to dial out each time you wish to use it. Is it cutting you off? Have you got your settings to lan? I also have it set to automactically detect settings but im on ntl so it might be slightly different. A word of advice - make sure your firewall and antivirus are updated on a regular basis, i do antivirus every day and scan once a day as im always connected even when pc is on standby.

Hiya Sonny
Its Virgin Broadband. I've got it to automatically detect settings and my LAN is OK.  I've got the latest norton antivirus, but wasn't sure about firewall, but have since learnt that Virgin provide this in their package. Whats happening is that the 2 little computers screen icons on the bottom right of the (menu?) bar are dissappearing. Then the "connecting to Virgin dial-up" box is popping up on my screen. Its connecting again really quickly, but can't see why its disconnecting in the first place?
Sorry about this blurb Sonny

I don't think you should be using Virgin Dial-up if you are on broadband.  I would guess something has gone wrong somewhere did you have BT out to change your line to BB?

Hi Jo,
Firewall issue - as long as you have one that covers all your needs and stops threats to the pc then no problem.
Settings - what are your conection settings in internet options as you might need to set up a connection from there. (As im with ntl i use a cable broadband so dont go through the phoneline) so it more than likely its just not set up correctly to maintain a permenant connection. Failing that virgin have a website that you might find usefull http://www.virgin.net/customers/broadbandhelp/

Thanks to you and Jackyjat....the penny has just dropped!! As jackyjat said, I shouldn't have been dialing through Virgin Dial Up if I'm on broadband....and with the info you also suggested Sonny, I've configured my dial up to recognise the new Network settings via the Speedtouch (box thingey!) that I have to plug into my phone line :D :D
I'm a very happy bunny now thanks to you both. Perhaps now I'll actually see how quickly it works! I'd already convinced myself it was faster
Very many thanks to you both

Why do you want to update your BIOS? it can really mess up the pc if you dont do it right
