- By Guest [gb] Date 12.06.05 10:12 UTC
hi there, my dog has got both ears tattooed. Can anyone give me more imformation about them? He is a soft coated wheaten terrier and has in his right ear IR and in his left ear 219. Thanks to anyone who can help, Gill
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 12.06.05 11:33 UTC
I wonder if IR stands for Ireland? Is there a separate Irish registry?
- By wheaten_mad [gb] Date 12.06.05 20:46 UTC
It might stand for Ireland, you could contact the Irish kennel club and they might be able to help, their website is http://www.ikc.ie I have three soft coated wheaten terriers by the way :) Two of which have one of their ears tattooed and they have seven numbers and letters in their ears. Where did you get him from? Cause if you rescued him it might be that he was born and tattooed in Ireland. It would be really good if you could join as there are two wheaten owners on here, and I love talking to people about their wheatens. Also with more information about the dog we might be able to help you find more about his tattoo.

Hi dollydaydream, it's really good to hear from another wheaten owner. I emailed the ikc last night so I'll just have to wait to hear back from them. I picked up Toby from a rescue kennels in Sheffield in March. I fell in love with his curls. At first I thought he was a poodle cross! He was very dirty with matts right up to his skin and crawling with fleas, he looked a really sad. My partner couldn't believe it when I said, underneath all that dirt and mess is a really handsome dog and that we had to give him a chance. We took him for a walk and Toby was really trying to sell himself, his tail was wagging none stop and he was the most licky dog I've ever encountered. He also met my border terrier, Meg, they got on really well, sadly I lost her to cancer in May, she was 14. Toby's settled very well, he was already house trained and uses his manners..... when he wants something! I'd always admired wheatens when I'd seen them on Crufts but I'd never dreamed of owning one, everybody stops and asks what breed he his, probably because you don't see any around here.

Awww im glad that you gave him a good home :) You said that he was really trying to sell himself when you took him for a walk and his tail was wagging and he is the kissest dog you've met? Well that just sums up a wheaten exactly!! :D Tail always wagging and very very kissy!! Do you have any more information about him? e.g. where he came from? Etc... Glad you seem to be enjoying having a wheaten. Talk to you soon :D

P.S have you got an email address cause I would love to see some pictures and I could send you one of our pups. :) My email is sarah_watkins_@hotmail.com

Hi Sarah, I haven't managed to find anything else out about Toby's tattoos yet, I'll just have to do some more emailing. I'd love to send you some pics of him but I'm new to this and I've only just mastered switching the computer on! Can you tell me what you bath your wheatens with? Or do you have them groomed? Toby scratches and nibbles himself a lot so I think he's got sensitive skin.
- By wheaten_mad [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:03 UTC
I bath the wheatens in baby shampoo, but you might want to have a look at some shampoo that is for sensitive skin for Toby. I do the grooming for the wheaten myself (with the help of our friends) as we show them and if you talk them to the groomers they don't know how to cut them. But as Toby is just a pet the groomers should be fine :) If you have an email address I could just send you a picture that you open with the email. Have you had a look at http://www.wheaten.org.uk this is the clubs website and there is a message board that you can talk to lots of different wheaten owners. You could also talk a look at http://www.softcoatedwheatens.co.uk and if you click of index of all dogs on the left hand side, there is a dog called Dougal and he is one our puppies :D hope to talk to you soon

Thanks for the info, Sarah. I'll have a look at the sites you mentioned. You can email me at stephendgem@aol.com      I'm going to try to find a groomer who knows how to make him look more like a wheaten because he's just getting his curls back after he was shaved. I don't think he'll like having a beard though, cos straight after eating or drinking he goes crazy trying to clean his face on your legs, carpet, sofa...... anything!

Hi Sarah, I've just been looking on the sites you gave me. Dougal is gorgeous! Toby looks just like Rooney uk although if you look on the rescue wheatens he looked like frosty.

Hi there thanks for the kind words about Dougal if you click on http://www.softcoatedwheatens.co.uk/Caillie's%20Pups.htm (sorry the link is not working so you will have to cut and paste) the puppy with the white ribbon on is also ours she is called Lottie and that picture was taken when they were only seven weeks old and now they are ten months! :D And Dougal is the one without a ribbon on. I will email you some more pictures soon. If you wanted to learn how to groom Toby or even if you just wanted to go out of interest, the wheaten club run grooming seminars. Where wheaten people will show you how to groom your dog and you can just go and watch or you can bring your dog and they will help you to groom him. All the info will be on the wheaten website. I recommend that you go to one of the wheaten fun days if you can make it as they are really good. You play games like hunt the sausage and kissest wheaten and they also have best rescue, but it is a really good cane to get to talk to people about their wheatens. Anyway talk soon

Hi Sarah, I've just had a look at your pups, they're really beautiful. Do you know where the wheaten club runs it's grooming seminars? I think it would be worth my while learning, I'm only used to hand stripping borders, goodness knows what I'd be like at grooming a wheaten! I wouldn't want Toby to end up looking like a poodle! The Irish KC have just emailed me and given me the phone number of the secretary of the Irish scwt club for some info about Toby's tattoos, I hope I can learn something from her. Toby went the wrong way about getting some attention today....... first he decided to empty the kitchen bin, then, when I'd cleaned everything up, he cocked his leg over it......... charming, I'm sure!! Still love him to bits though.

Thanks for the info, Sarah. How did you do in the show? Gill
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 20.06.05 13:20 UTC
Hi Gill - I just had to say how surprised I was to read that you came across Toby in a rescue centre.  I used to own a wheaten and, as a result, I got to know a few breeders. I'm sure they would have been horrified if one of their pups had ended up in rescue, especially in the condition that Toby was in.
Having said that, I'm so glad you saw his potential and decided to take him - whatever his history it looks like his luck has definitely changed for the better.  He sounds adorable and I'm sure you'll have great fun being owned by him :)

Best wishes
Jay

Hi gill,

We only took dougal and he won his class so we were pleased with that. His just missed out on best puppy because his coat its not mature yet (he has an irish coat and they take longer to mature than the english). But we were very pleased. And the B&B that we stopped in was fabulous so we had a great time, thanks for asking :) Hope you might be able to go to one of the wheaten fun day because they are great and they have thing like 'best rescue dog' and so on, its also a really nice day out and you can talk to lots of wheaten owners. Anyway talk soon

Hi Gill

Sorry but you are miles away from me as I livemuch furher south, still worth asking - I'm sure you will find a groomer nearer to help you - have you tried asking on the SCWT Club of GB forum? www.wheaten.org.co.uk (I think)

Sarah - I currently own wheatens & your boy looked great at Border Union.
- By wheaten_mad [gb] Date 24.06.05 21:25 UTC
Gill, I didn't get your pictures so they must be floating around in cyber space! :D
I will email you a picture of our two and then if you hit reply then that might get to me better

Jason, Thank you for what you said about Dougal! :D Were you showing or just watching? Hope you have a good day weather you showed or not.
