Topic Dog Boards / General / Akita - Help Please
- By Gabrieldobe Date 19.06.05 18:40 UTC
Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone could give me any ideas to help someone who has been left with 2 Akitas? Her husband has left her and also left the 2 dogs - he doesn't want them... The dogs have always lived outdoors - never as family pets, although they do have a child at the house the dogs have been under socialised. They are an 8yr old speyed bitch and a 7yr old entire male. The wife has never had anything to do with the dogs so they have not been out of the garden for weeks. They are however, well fed and cared for, with adequate shelter etc. She has contacted both akita rescue and welfare but neither can offer any help. The situation is desperate as she is nervous around these dogs, as she is with all large dogs. If anyone can suggest anything she would be most grateful, she is worried that if they go to a general animal shelter that they will be euthanised because they may not be easy to rehome.

Why won't breed rescue help? That seems unusual to me, are there temperament issues that make it unfeasable for them to place.   I'm afraid I always think that if knowledgable rescue organisations consider a dog unhomeable then, sadly, perhaps the best thing is euthanasia.

No Isabel, they just said that they were busy and to get around to them could take up to a few months. The dogs are intimidating when they are on their own territory, as are my dobes. I have groomed the bitch at my parlour and found her easy to handle - not aggressive, but she seemed slightly stressed with new situations. They obviously need to be assessed by someone experienced with the breed/behaviour, if they were deemed as not rehomable then she would have to take that on board.

Could she not hang on a few months until rescue could help her.  Maybe if you are not intimidated by them you could give them the occasional outing.  I just feel these need very knowledgable people to place them.
