Have a look on the currys website www.currys.co.uk they do a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo L1300 Its £570 or something like that, my mum just got one - not amazing spec, well good enough, looks nice, has wireless etc not too heavy
Actually ive just looked on their site and they have reduced it to £499.99 a web exclusive - here is the nice long link

Thanks
Son says I have to look for 512ram and pref 2ghz and 60gd hard drive.
Its okay but when you are on a budget you cant always be so fussy.
Other son says make sure its pentium or athlon. I am getting depressed now..its a minefield knowing which to go for. What one has got another hasn't.

Sometimes if you can't find what you're after on the web you can get a good bargain in store too ;) Have you a PC World nearby? My first lap top was a Sony VAIO from them and was a shop sample which was being superceded (they had lots of different ones just happened that was the one we went for) and it was a great starter and worked out at almost 50% off from memory. I've since upgraded on two separate occasions (even the top spec models are superceded practically by the time you get them out of the box at home  ) and always got a better buy from a PC World store than anywhere else could offer me for the make ,model and features I wanted. Personally I would always stick with a pentium processor (but no qualms with athlon) but certainly wouldn't get an obscure make.... Haven't priced any in the last few months but 60gb hard drive would have been a push back then for under £600. Good luck, Teri :)

Yes - I treated myself to a Dell laptop recently .Both my children have Dell laptops for university and are very pleased with them. If you only want to use the Internet, email, write letters etc then a fairly cheap one is fine :)

Star, my husband bought an Acer recently and is very pleased so far. Not the same model as the one advertised but that shouldn't make much difference. The chap we use to sort out our pc's came round to do the fiddly bits (neither of us have too much confidence when it comes to wires/plugs etc !!). He recommends Toshiba laptops, simply because he says that any that he has had to work on or sort out for people are quite easy. He thought Acer good too, very solid - some of them are like paper !. Heard many bad things about Tiny - basically, if they gone wrong you are stuck, apparently you can't update them and the one my friend bought seems very flimsy and delicate although he's had it for 5 months with no problems.

This seems to be the highest spec I can find for money but think I might go to PC world tomorrow and have alook at what they have anyway.
Thanks
Hi i bought my son a IBM thinkpad laptop last xmas, wonderful piece of technology
Right - what are you going to use the laptop for?
Im a geek lol i have lots of computers and I like your sons have things i personally look for, usually 1gb ram and an intel pentium 4, however i look for that because i do lots of graphics editing / have lots of programs open etc.
If you want the laptp for the net / champdogs / office etc etc the laptop i suggested is fine, if you do a search for amilo L1300 on google you can find some places selling it with the 512mb rather than the 256 if you think you need more memory.
If you say exactly what you plan to do on it i can have a look for some more for you
