Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / I forgot how horrid puppies are!!!!
- By Tenno [gb] Date 18.06.05 15:14 UTC
After not having a pup for 3 yrs & now having 2, I forgot what little pains in the bum they are :-)

Things I forgot -

How much puppy biting hurts

How annoying it is when you have stood in the rain for an hour saying 'do wee-wee' only for them to come in & do it on the floor.

How tidy I have to keep the house!

How many shoes they 'kill'

Anyone else think of anything?

Hundreds - that's why I only did it once. Since then I have and will stick to young rescue dogs. Fixing someone elses problems is easier than trying to prevent them in the first place. But then I did have the puppy from hell. ;-)

Ah, but puppy breath - just can't beat it ;)   Making me all broody you are :D

You know you love the cuddles, the puppy smell, her cuteness, her innocense of "would I do that" Her eyes, her whole puppy expesion, knowing that she will one day grow into her feet and ears!  Watching the way she acts.  You love all that! ;) :D

Watching them open their eyes, first steps, first bark (soo cute). What I don't miss are all the little piddles everywhere and being frightened of stepping on them.

I live with a permanent state of puppyhood in my house, 5 under 2 at the moment and 2 of those are under a year.  Please inform me if you will, what is a tidy house, what are a matching pair of socks, and god forbid I ever go into hospital unexpectedly :P Matching undies no longer exist, unless of course you count the holes.  Ahhh Puppy breath a snuggles into your neck, what could be more enjoyable.

LOL

Feeling your pain!!! With a 12 week old Newf in the house, I am suffering from all of this and more!! And I'm getting slightly worried about her growing into her feet and ears. It's a good thing I love BIG dogs...took her for her 2nd vaccination this morning and got some strange looks from the other 12 week old puppy owners!!  And I am pretty much resigned to tha fact that my house will never be tidy again (worse when the slobbering kicks in!!). I'm slowly coming to terms with the claw marks and dents caused by bones being hurled around (some dogs do agility, obedience or flyball...mine are olympic bone-hurlers) in my beautiful (and expensive) wooden floor. Not to mention the additional wear and tear on the washing machine. After washing all the bedding, blankets etc today, it looks like I've washed Chewbacca in it. The getting up in the middle of the night to stand in the garden for hours on end trying to convince her to 'go pee'. The endless mopping up of water as she tips her water bowl for the twentieth time in an hour...wish someone could explain why I still love her so much and wouldn't change her for the world!

Hi we have a 14 week old newfoundland cross bernese mountain dog,she is beautiful but naughty, and is still biting although not as much but it gets more painful glad when she stops teething. I have watched some teethmarks appear in my 9 month old leather three piece suite and picked up the tip about  vics vapour rub it works, but besides all that I wouldnt be without her we had her from 7 weeks old but it seems she has always been with us and she brings so much joy to us and is worth the puppy problems and when they grow up they are such wonderful dogs to own . Like you we get some strange looks when people ask how old she is and you reply with 12 to 14 weeks and they think they are about 6-7 months old and the most frequently asked question is do you have a big house no we dont but we love big dogs spilling over the floor and having to step over them.Good luck with your puppy I am sure you will have great times.

....thought it was just me.....

We've got our first ever puppy, after loads of rescue dogs  She's a 7 1/2 weeks old BC and running us ragged (we've had her 3 1/2 days !), she will sleep for hours and you know that the longer she does, the more hyper she'll be when she wakes (....those particular trainers were a bit old anyway.....)

But, two of the cats seem to be accepting her, she's absoloutely fascinated by the chickens and 'old Megs' ( a 14 year old BC) has almost stopped snarling at her......

She's getting the idea of house training - or maybe we've just been spending more time in the garden (anyone know where I can buy kitchen roll
by the lorry load ?)

I know that we''ll look back at the photos and videos from now and say wasn't it wonderful ?..........hmmmm...........won't we ?

Scrums

Oh yes,

dragging a pup around attached to your ankle does hurt, as does your credibility with the neighbours at 5am in just a bath robe, in the drizzle, talking to the path saying '.....nice pup......hurry up.....grrrrrr.....'

I am loving it :D The first couple of days were hard but Maddy is a dream now, she is beginning to learn the ropes (she is 13 weeks old) She has a good routine and that helps us ;)

In the first week we DID have puddles and we did suffer 3 eaten tea towels ...but apart from that she has been really good :)

I love them to bits!  Why I have no idea :-)

I do love the puppy smell & when the are curled up under my PC desk in their basket fast asleep I cant help just watching them - untill the next dash to the garden - lol.

What about that the way male pups hump things, my 12 week old pup loves my daughters talking pig, we know when he's have a hump when we hear from her bedroom " this little piggy went wee wee wee all the way home" so my kids sing "Oscar loves the piggy, Oscar loves the piggy".

Aw i think they're great to watch with all that zest for life, and when they get curious it's great, i can't wait to get another bullmastiff, but then i'd have four dogs and i dont wont to be over run, i do love them though they're well worth.  I could sit in the back for hours watching my dogs be silly running around chasing each other like lunys.

Warm regards susan

I think I prefer breeding litters when they get to the pain in the bum stage they go off somewhere else.  Mind you Molly my 2 year old is as good as having a puppy i have yet to leave her alone in a room without coming back to find something hanging out of her mouth although she did go through a phase when she was calm when she was pregnant but back to normal now!!!

Onlyn if your lucky.  It is not uncommon in our breed to still have the odd puppy around up to about  weeks, being a numerically small breed you only need a glut of one sex or antohter to find the odd puppy unplaced even if there are people still looking for pups.

Buffy is now 6 months is a little monster, no plants left, bricks all round the edge of the garden where she has tried to visit next door under the fence!!.... my flip flops have mysteriosly dissapeared...the neighbours think i'm barking mad.. not only for standing around going 'wee wee' but also from playing silly games and waving my arms around trying to make me more interesting than the nasty thing she has run off with in her mouth!! mainly snails and dirt! oh and walking round clicking a funny thing and saying good girl as i take the nasty bit of cheese out of my pocket!!

Buffy is currently emptying the paddling pool by practising her digging skills in it!!

Oh but I love her and she makes me smile and laugh so may times a day.

Got to say Brainless I have also had problems getting a litter shifted because they were the wrong colour!  People cannot get their heads around the liver colour and if they are liver dogs they are a right pain to shift.  This litter
I could have sold the whole lot 10 times over and they are so cute I could eat the lot of them.  I also have friends who have got left with puppies so even breeds with quite a few buyers can be difficult to shift in fact I believe in JG said once that was how she ended up with the boys.

I would also say that having got Lucky at 4 months it has been bliss she has been much easier than having a little puppy.  In fact if I was ever to buy one in again I would be very tempted to do the same again.

I'm with Teri - broody Mack's mum here! Its fab having them from such a young age and seeing them grow from a quiet, reserved pup (speaking of my westie) and growing to a confident & beautiful dog. Although I have to say I have never had a rescue dog - I suppose it must be great to have a rescue dog and give them a new lease of life.

What is the thing with puppy breath? My puppy stank to high heaven and is still a smelly dog now. The others have all been rescues but I have held zillions of other pups and I still don't know what puppy breath is all about!

OOOhhhh!!! All this talk of puppies is not good for me .. it just makes me want another one, but I'd have to sedate my hubby as he thinks 4 is enough
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.06.05 22:02 UTC
Puppy breath I am neutral about, neither finding it pleasant or unpleasant.  It is peculiar to young pups though, and some would call it a bad smell, but most doggy folk like it. :D
