Topic Dog Boards / Health / PLEASE HELP!! lump on lab's neck
- By DextersLab [gb] Date 17.06.05 21:04 UTC
Hi, new to this website - desperately seeking info! feeling very worried. Was just stroking Dexter (1yr old lab) and found a large, hard, free-moving lump on the right side of his neck - about the size of a walnut. It doesn't seem to hurt him, and there are no obvious wounds around it. It can't have been there long, as I've only just noticed it. He has recently been anaesthatised for dew claw removal (and neutering), and diagnosed with OCD for which he is on metacam. I've also just changed his food to Burns. (not sure if these are relevant!?!?).  So, I'm feeling sick with worry, with the obvious ideas that spring into my head with the word 'lump'. Any ideas what this could be??I will try and take him to vets tomorrow, but if there are no appointments I'll have to wait till monday!
Thanks,
~Clare

My first thought is that it's where he may have been given an antibiotic or pain-killing injection after his surgery. If it's free-moving, it's less likely to be anything to worry about.

I agree if its free moving should be ok.
when my dogs get vaccinations I notice the vet doesnt rub the area which they always used to do so I do it.
But sometimes when they are giving injections at the surgery it forms a mass under the skin
Is the OCD bad? why the matacam so soon ?

Agree with the others - sounds like it's from a S/C injection.  :)

thanks - hopefully it'll be nothing, was just feeling it and it seemed to get smaller as if it popped (nothing came out) - not sure if good or bad!!!but will definitely get it checked to be on the safe side.  as for the ocd, it seems bad at times, but no experience of this before - vet recommends metacam as and when he needs it, he seems particularly bad at the moment.  i'd be interested to hear any alternatives you suggest mattie?

how old is he? I dont like long term use of metacam OCD.
sometimes they can grow out of it I would like to know more of the diagnosis. feel free to email me

Our dog has just recently had an op and had this lump for 2weeks on his neck.
It is slightly un-nerving seeing this large lump but in our case it was due to the injections.

Good luck with the other problems.

I had this on my little boys arm when he had his second and third baby innoculations, it is a reaction in the injection site.

It sounds like an injection site reaction to me. My dog had two big operations, and he had a huge lump on his neck after the second, which was due to the medication administration. Check with you vet.

Thanks everyone - have checked with vet, and he was given antibiotics in his neck after his op.  what a relief!!!!  thanks all for you advice, it really put my mind at rest!
