Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Boy dogs.....

We have been offered a boy dog through rescue, and we already have a bitch. He has been "done!" so there can be no chance of pups, which is good news as I don't breed and would never want to.

Anyway this would be our first boy dog, and I was wondering, so they still try and mate, even though he has been done?? Will he still try it on with my bitch? will he still be frisky?

Thanks in advance,

If your bitch has not been spayed then, when she is in season, he may still try to and apparently ties can happen, although of course she will not become pregant.  If he does behave like that I would say you would still have to separate them for the duration of her season as it would be very wearing for the bitch to tolerate that behaviour for that long.  If she has been spayed though I doubt there would be any problems, some dogs do like to play in a very "physical" fashion though but, providing there are not big size differences, she should have no difficulty in putting him in his place if she finds this tedious.

I have a neutered male who has never shown any interest in mounting any other. In fact, he tends to be mounted by other males when playing but has never reciprocated the behaviour. I guess it depends very much on the dog, though as I do know of several neutered males who do try to mount anything and everything!!
