Topic Dog Boards / Health / Very swollen eye - 9wk old pup!
- By Blues mum Date 16.06.05 16:15 UTC
Hi all, went to bed last night around 11, all was fine, then about half 2 blue came in crying, i thought he needed to wee so i got up let him out as usual, not really taking much notice as was dark and i was tired, got back into bed and he came in again about 10 mins later crying so i put my hand down to stroke him and felt this massive lump near his eye and thought, jesus what the hell is that, so ive jumped up and turned the light on to find he had a massive swollen eye!!  mostly swollen on top and the other eye was a bit swollen underneith so ive phoned the emergency vet and went all the way to skeg(20 odd miles from where i live-thats what happens when you live in the sticks) and she said his either bashed it which he hasnt or its an allergic reaction to an insect bite or something, so she gave him an injection to take away the swelling and it has now gone down alot, tho still a bit puffy, ive also bathed his eyes in cool boiled water like she said to.
He is normal in his self, eating/drinking/weeing and pooing fine - not loose at all, he was sick yesterday morning and again this morning, but not sure whether this morning was related to the car journey or injection, the vet also said if it has got bigger or not gone down then to go back, but im going to keep a very close eye on him today and see how it goes.
Has anyone else had this happen to their dog??
Any thoughts/advice would be very much appreciated X

Hi Melissa,

One of mine as a puppy had a similar experience which was the result of a wasp sting :(  She was given Piriton in tablet form and with regular bathing it reduced in swelling quite quickly.  Unfortunately the following spring she chased another wasp which stung her twice on the face before she ate it   That time the allergic reaction was much more severe as the swelling came up instantaneously and she was vomiting (how we realised she'd swallowed it because she brought it back up).  I was at the vet's within 10 minutes during which time her tongue had begun swelling and she was given emergency meds by injection and then put on a drip.  We're more than a little paranoid as you can imagine but there are only so many precautions we can take - we do however carry Piriton with us if away from home and have a supply in the house at all times.  Hopefully your little one will be absolutely fine and this will be an isolated incident.  Keep us posted and good luck, Teri :)

Hi teri, thanks, thats terrible what happened 2 your pup, i must admit it frightened the life out of me seeing his eye so swollen, didnt know what to think!
Are piriton tabs that we have safe for dogs then?

Hi Mel, sorry to here about Blue. Big hugs.

I use Pyriton syrup for children on my pup Dozer when he has reactions, usually when the grass is cut. He quite likes the taste too :-) Hope it goes down soom, keep us posted.

Hi again - yes, they are the exactly same ones :)  The dosage is different (actually higher for my bitch than for people) but I'd recommend you check with your vet what would be appropriate for your dog should that be the medication he is prescribed - just like us what suits one won't be what suits all.

Regards, Teri

Oh dear - that's a real shame - and he's only just come home to you - LOL

We had a lab cross pup, Dillon, years ago and he was the most accident prone pup ever.  His worst accident was getting his eyelid caught on some wire fencing - all hell broke loose and it was a real bugger to get him off the wire, plus all the screaming that went with it - aarrgghh

Hope Blue (and you!) make a full recovery very soon!  :D :D :D

Sorry to hear about that vicki :(
Thought id let you know blues eye is now back to normal, im so relieved, maybe il invest in some piriton and have a word with the vet next time i go up for some worming tabs, suppose it will save me 70 quid should he have a reaction like that again. Dam those vet fees!! :)

Pleased to hear it - agree about the vet fees - I always try to avoid them if I can, but sometimes they are the only (and safest) answer!  Give Blue a hug from me - he is just too gorgeous - reminds me of when I had my GD - Suki - still miss her like mad......
