hi could anyone help me ,ive just been to my vets to vaccinate  my pup and he ask me if i was going to get her spayed, he said they like to do it around 6mths before there first season , i always thought it was few mths after there first season it was ok to be done!!

It seems to be better to leave it until at least one season.  By spaying before she has had a season it seems to reduce the risk of eostrogen fed cancer of the mammary glands to just about zero but a bitch spayed after one or two season seems to be at very low risk too.  On the negative side though, a immature bitch spayed seems to be more likely to suffer urinary problems, either incontinence or tendancy to urinary tract infections which although these can be dealt with can be a lifelong problem, different breeds seem to have a greater tendancy to others in this respect though.  I would discuss these aspect further with your vet.

Hi Mabel, first all, do you WANT to have your bitch spayed? Don't be pushed into anything you don't want to do, just because it's the vet that asked.

Have a look at some old discussions on the subject, there is some variation in opinion, then weigh it all up for your personal circumstances, and you decide.

Click on search at the top and type in spaying.
