Hi all,
Just a quick question about Toby's eyes. He always seems to have something in them. I wouldn't call them 'runny' eyes exactly, but they always appear to be 'clogged' up with this stuff, whatever it is. I hope I'm making sense here?!
He's been to the vets for other problems, and they did a test to see how his tear production was, and although it was on the low side, they didn't follow this up and said it was ok.
Any ideas what it might be? Otherwise to this he's in perfect health, or so it would seem.
Thanks in advance.
Sharon

My first though is congungtaivtus (sp?) but vets normally know this sign. It's resonably common, something that comes, you get eye drops and it goes.
Is it a greeny gunk?

This time of year sleepy eyes are quite common with lots of polleen etc around. As long as it isn't green and profuse then it is unlikely to be infection. If the tear production is a bit low then the particles won't wash away with tears.

Hi. It's pretty colourless from what I can tell, it looks disgusting - bit like clear snot!! He's had it ever since we got him about 5 months ago.

My freinds dobes sometimes ahve snotty eyes, but their eyes are almond shaped with very thin tight fitting lids, so I suspect it is just overspill from all the contqaminants around here. She just wipes it with a tissue.
My Shih Tzu has the same problem, so I have to clean his eyes every day to make sure he doesn't get any infection with the build up in his fur. I've been told it can be worse when they are teething!

Thanks guys. That's set my mind at rest. It's like having a child with a constant runny nose! Oh well, good practice for the future for kids I suppose! I'll make sure I wipe his eyes whenever I notice it, to make sure he doesn't get infected.
Thanks for the replies.
Hi
I have an old Dobermann that has had the tear test on his eyes, the vet said he suffers with 'Dry Eye' and gave us some cream for them. Since then I have looked at various web sites to find out more, have a look at this it might help:-
