Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / excuse for not CEA testing
- By Guest [gb] Date 17.06.05 07:11 UTC
I have just been let down badly by Sheltie breeder. She said she would eye test her puppies at six weeks so I waited only to have her tell me she wouldn't be eye testing them after all. I feel its important to get an eye tested pup ( I can't believe how many breeders I've found that are not eye testing) and I'm not sure I believe her excuse for not testing them.  The excuse was the place she has to go to only does eye tests once a month and it is fully booked and the other place is 30 miles away. Is this really good enough? I don;t think so but I thought I'd ask breeders here anyway. I missed up the chance of a puppy several times because I had faith in this breeder and I feel so down beat and bitter. I have to search all over again for a breeder. *sigh*

If you know of any good Sheltie breeders with pups right now, please drop me a line. My e-mail is: sugarcobra@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks

Only 30 miles away? That's a feeble excuse. I have a friend who takes her puppies about a hundred miles for hearing tests. So no, I wouldn't trust that breeder.

I would contact the breed club.  Would be very surprised if it wasn't part of their code of ethics to eye test the pups.  If this breeder is a member then they will be asked to explain thensleves!  Ask them for a list of reputable breeders who all eye test.  Good luck.

tbh,its best to be let down by her now than to get an affected pup. good luck with your search.

Shocking.  My best friends travelled from Dudley to Newmarket to have their puppies hearing tested after all 30 miles is about as far as I go to have mine tested and to me that is right on my doorstep.  Why not ring the breed clubs I live next door but one to one of the secretaries but dont know what her number is!  The KC will have their numbers.

Thank you very much for your kind replies (I was guest). I felt certain there was something wrong with the breeder but I liked it confirmed.

I have had a stroke of luck since asking this question. I went to a dog show on Saturday and made contact with a breeder who says she fully eye tests between 6 - 7 weeks. She also lives not too far off. which is wonderful! Most breeders of Shelties don't seem to live any where near London on average, I notice. Further more going by the Shetland Sheepdog she was showing that day her dogs should be quite lovely in temperament as well as looks.
