Topic Dog Boards / General / Flea and tick alternative

Sometime last week, I made a post on bathing my dogs. I was speaking to a person called Teri who mentioned that there was an alternative to flea spray. It was called Allugan and basically, all you had to do was bath your dogs, pour it on and leave them to dry!

Seems a brilliant idea to us. Especially as my dogs absolutely hate any type of spray! I have tried the Bob Martins spot-on flea and tick repellant but it wasn't very effective. I have seen the Drontal spot-on flea and tick repellant advertised on TV but I was wondering if this is anywhere near as effective as the spray, which the dogs envy!

Anyway, back to Allugan. I was wondering if anyone knows of anything like this that is on the market today because Allugen seemed to disappear quite a while ago.

Allugan was taken off the market years ago as its quite toxic, but by god it worked well :) lol
Stronghold & frontline drops are great & i believe that  one of these companies have also made one that you put on the base of the neck & not only does it flea treat but also worms at the same time :D ( please someone jump in if i am wrong )
I tend to steer clear of " Pet shop " products as they dont work, buy from your vets they are more expensive at first but they work which in the long run saves you money, as then you aren't buying lots of pet shop products because you've found that they've failed ;)
Some people also believe that garlic is a good flea treatment but only IF your dog does not have a flea allergie, its believed to be that the fleas take a bite hate the taste & jump off :D lol ( i use garlic in my dogs food & touch wood have never had fleas ...... as yet ) However if your dog has a flea allergie then only 1 flea bite could trigger a reaction off :(

A natural alternative is to use pennyroyal and wormwood, infuse about a teaspoon of each in a litre of boiling water for about 5 mins. Remove the herb and dispose of carefully (you dont particually want your dog eating them). Allow to cool and pour over the dog as a final rinse. You can also use the herbs about the house again out of reach and perhaps with something like lavender as the smell will help keep the house free of fleas etc.

You can make up a flea repellent with a few drops of suitable essential aromatherapy oils, (eg cedarwood, lavender, eucalyptus) which can be swooshed around in water and stroked onto the dog with a cloth. It's important to avoid eyes and mouth as the oils can sting quite badly. I have used this a fair bit and it works well for me  applied once a week or so :)

I used to use a great product by Sherley's which was a talcum powder which contained essential oils that were flea repellent and it did the job well, keeping fleas off and also made the coat smell gorgeous :P but I believe that's been off themarket now for quite a few years. Stock Nutrition used to do a "natural" flea repellent too.

We have the frontline drops from the vet, you just put it on the scruff of the neck - dont know about a worm one? but they are doing a combi one now which kills fleas in the home too not sure how it works as im sure thats a "spot on" type thing as well. Seems effective, Leo doesnt have fleas, The dog i had previously detested the sprays too but i dont think these spot on ones were available then.

My girls are due to be frontlined, but one of them has a litter of pups, is there anything we can use that will be safe?  Pups tend to play and chew on mums ears etc. so don't want the risk of them digesting the frontline!

Sorry, i put Drontal spot-on flea repellant lol. I meant Frontline! Do you think they're as effective as the spray though because I sometimes wonder lol. After all, I live in the middle of nowhere on the Salisbury Plain and the place is riddled with fleas, ticks and any other creepy crawly you can think of. Anyway, thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

I have tried front line drops, stronghold drops and now we are on to frontline spray and nothing seems to stop the ticks, Alfie has two marks on his face where ive had to pull ticks out :(

See, i've always doubted the drops because i don't think they're as effective as the spray. Surely there has to be an alternative.
