Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Aggression with bones!

I have recently put my two dogs onto barf diet, trouble is we have had a few scraps at dinner time, i throw 2 bones into the garden and the dogs growl and bark at each other, and have on one occasion fought, they are both male and get on soo well at all other times, is it normal for dogs to get soo aggressive over food!? silly question i know but their characters are soo different when they have a bone!

Hi Guest,

All food is high value to dogs but bones are extremely prized ;)  I think simply "throwing 2 bones into the garden" is very likely to make most dogs that normally get on well become a bit stroppy with one another as each will be hoping to "win" the top prize - and being greedy that's likely to be both bones :P

Can't you perhaps jut split them up - ie. if you prefer them to only have them outside, physically take the bones out and give one dog his at one end of the garden and the other dog at the opposite end?  Teri :)

Is it normal for children, even siblings, to fight/argue over a toy etd?

In both cases the answer is yes.

I feed raw and I feed bones, I expect my dogs to resource guard from each other, hence they are separated during this time.

It is normal dog behaviour; if you cannot accept it, separate them or cease giving them bones.......

i must be very lucky because i have 6 dogs and when i give them their meat or bones they just go off in their own little places in the garden and quietly eat them no fights at all :D

I agree with the first posts and especially tohmes my children fight over everything even though there is two of everything, they still perstist on fighting over the same thing.  In an ideal world dogs wouldn't fight over the same bone but after all they are dogs, so as the other posters have suggested i would personally separate them so they can enjoy eating their bones separately, without worrying if the other dog has got something better.

Warm regards Susan
