Topic Dog Boards / Health / Price of shots...

Iam taking Tiva and Junior to the vet on friday. Junior is only getting looked at explained on another topic. Anyhow I only do the rabbie shot got to keep that up to date, I was told the yearly vac with rabbies it would come to $79 plus tax and with just rabbies it is $52 plus tax both include the exam. I could not believe the difference in price, my vet does not have a problem with me only doing the rabbie shot as I feel they don't need the other vacs cause you cannot boost their imunity any higher then it all ready is...  Just have Junior examined its costing me $44 plus tax and thats not including anything else that needs to be done.... Hopefully my bill is under $100

Even tho Iam not doing the other vacs do you think I have to worry about them getting parvo or anything else? We do go for lots of walks in the park and all my dogs are healthy. I have done alot of research on this and Iam know this has been discussed a great deal.... Do you lot still take your dogs all over the place for walks with only doing the rabbie shots? Hope that made sense...

Edit: Just to say they have had all their shots up till now, they are older dogs all range from 4 - 11 years. Oh and should I worry about Taz's rabbie shots since he is 11 years old and the most we do with him is maybe a walk around the block he can't go any further?

Hi Dollface,

I don't think this site will be of much help in general re. the rabies shots as this is a UK site and rabies vaccine is not given here routinely - only for dogs being taken abroad on the Pets Passport Scheme, which is a relatively low number pro rata of the canine population :)

As to boosters re parvo for eg. these are often a hot topic of debate on this board and it may be worth your while doing a search on vaccinations and/or boosters and reading some of the previous threads - you'll find that members views range from strictly done annually for life, to first vacs only which may or may not be followed up by homeopathic nosodes, others only vaccinate if titre testing dictates low levels, etc etc. so pretty varied and really down to personal views when you take on board all the different opinions and discuss the options as well as local incidences of disease with your own vet  :P
Sorry I can't be more informative, Regards, Teri ;)

Hi, I'm based in France and all my dogs are given the annual booster plus rabies jab it costs 35 Euros for the checkup and combined jab which in English pounds would be about £24!  I have been checking up to see whether my dogs actually need the booster as one is nearly 12 and the other is nearly 8 and have regularly had boosters.  The vet here has said that it depends where I take them, will they stay in my garden or go into forest or open land where wild animals go.  However we have decided not to give my older dog her annual booster - mainly due to the fact she has been poorly recently with a tumour of the spleen, but also because she doesn't go that far now and I think she should be fairly well covered anyway - the jury is still out on the other one!

I took Tiva in and had her 3 yr rabie shots, she is very healthy for 7 years old :) I asked her what she thinks and she said it depends where I take them too. Tiva really doesn't go that far and I always watch where my dogs walk ect ect. I don't know I may take her in for her boosters if we are planning on going anywhere...

Had Junior's leg looked at and she gave me some stuff to put on it to stop him from licking it. So far so good :)
