I have 2 dogs aged 3 and one 10 months and i am having problems walking them together. They are both fine seperately, even together with 2 people. When on my own they dont pull( though the puppy has an occasional lapse and lunges at the odd thing)they constantly try to change sides and go in different directions.I am trying to have one on each side .If I do have them in one hand they both try to race and do end up pulling. They are only a small breed so I am not being overpowered but I would like them to walk nicely and not be tied up.Any suggestions?

Get different colured leads.  When they are thoroughly twisted they will find it uncomfortable to mess about, or you could use a coupling chain.

I walk five together with five different colured leads, every now and then they need untangling.  I always walk them on the one side.

When they are on their own, do you walk them on both sides?  I find with my two that they tend to stick to the side they are usually on - for Opi, the right, and Remy, the left side.  When I leave the house with opi, she will actually lag behind me up the driveway until she can get on the right side.

It ahs taken a while, but I've found if you're calm and patient with them, they will get the hang of it - whenever my two try to cross my path or pull, I stop, say "no" low and calmly, then "back" - if they don't move back into position themselves, I guide them back gently.  I do this every single time they try to cross or move out of position - any one time they get away with it, my training gets et back a few walks' worth!

Keep at it, they will get the idea eventually :) it's taken almost 2 years with my two, and many, many individual walks and it's just now starting to click.  But they are extremely independant dogs, so I kind of expect to have difficulty bringing them round to my views on how a walk should be :D But the patience does pay off - now I can walk both dogs to a field nicely at heel on their chosen sides, then round that field on 6ft leads with them right at the end of said leads, wherever they want to be, without them pulling.  Remy will try to pull if there's a rabbit or a dog, but a calm "no" and bringing him back a little (or waiting till he comes back toward me, if he's just pulling for no reason) does the trick.

I have two Beardie girls 2yrs and 7m and I walk them on a brace when out together and find it much easier with one lead puppy tends to want to walk close to Ellie plus Ellie is very good  and walks to heel this encourages puppy to do the same.

I have two Beardies a girl and a boy.  I have always walked them on the same side. left, whether out as a pair or singly.  Beardies can be hard work, especially the boys and mine boy did weave a lot to begin with.  Just takes patience, lots of it.  I use a brace lead also if they are particularly joyous, translate bouncy, crazy being Beardies, and later in the day go back to single leads.  They both walk on the left side now with little trouble.

If you want to walk them on either side, try teaching one dog to HEEL - walk on the left side and one dog to SIDE - walk on the right side.  Can be done with training and I am getting the hang of that one as we speak.  Teach each dog separately before you try to put them together on opposite sides.  I use the dog's name and the command HEEL or SIDE so that they know what they are supposed to be doing.

Thank you for your replys, I would prefer to walk them to walk them on one side, as when walking them singly,I have them on the right. What is a brace lead and how does this work?.Also I did notice when out today walking with my OH that my older boy Bart is worse than the puppy. So I think its back to basics with him.

Hello again.

I got my brace attachmet from Pets Mart.  It is just two clip ends that are all part of the same attachment which in turn joins onto my existing lead.  So what happens is the one lead splits right near the collar end into two parts.  This two parts are then clipped on to the dogs.  They are then tied to each other to a certain extent with about 24 inches of freedom between collars and attached to the same lead.  It is difficult for them to get tangled up this way and they also find it difficult to weave and pull as they are pulling against each other as well as against you.  Thats the theory any way.

Its not easy to explain without a diagram.

I have found a picture on the internet you could look at http://www.windchill.com.au/leads.htm it will give you the idea.  Hope this helps
