Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / The Dog Whisperer - Steve Fryer
- By Pam Ayling [gb] Date 22.07.01 15:55 UTC
This afternoon I went to my local Pets at Home shop.
I took Yonnie (22 months Pharaoh Hound) with me to
buy dog treats & stuff for my gerbils and mice.
The Dog Whisperer was in store for the day.
Anybody ever been to his talks or used him for training?
Check out his website:

Whilst I was making my purchases he looked after Yonnie
and did a little heel work with her - of course Yonnie was
on her best behaviour / not pulling !

I saw Steve Fryer a while ago now, he came to an obedience club near to us and to be honest he had basics but he kept avoiding answering anything more complex by saying he'd have to see the dog first. We were not impressed by him. I also saw Monty Roberts that year and he had me in tears I have never seen anything so amazing in my life.

I understand that their is a new series starting next week with Jan Fennel,
the dog listener, on TV.
I'm afraid I've not got a high opinion of her.

I am not keen on Jan Fennell either, as she solves all theproblems with the same solutions. Not good!

I firmly believe that each case, dog and owner, not to mention situation,is different.

That brings back memmories of meeting her/Barbara Woodhouse
at Crufts one year. Seemed eccentric to me !

Hi there

I totally agree with you about Monty Roberts, a brilliant man who is not afraid to be a bit of a maverick and who uses his brain and puts the animals first.

As for Steve Fryer, this question was on Dog club UK too, and there were several replies, Steve Fryer calls hiimself "The Dog Whisperer" but he does not whisper, he shouts at the dog!! He does not answer any questions unless he has recieved them in writing first, he charges £85 and also gives appalling advice, including alpha rolls, and suggesting that dogs are dominant when they are not, etc etc etc. It's easy to say a dog is dominant and the owner has to dominate it, and then if it doesn't work then hey! it's the owner fault. Never mind that he made the wrong diagnosis in the first place.

The dog concerned was a Bouvier exhibiting obvious chase behaviour, not dominance, and was cured using motivational methods. As far as i am concerned, "behaviourists" such as Steve fryer give the decent and knowledgeable ones a bad name. Far too many people set themselves up as behavourists.

Best wishes
Lindsay

Hear, hear Lindsay! trouble is, too many people are taken in by a gimmicky title as we well know!
