lo all  i was lookin for some posts on letting pups in the garden but didnt find any .my question is can i let them in the garden at 6 weeks old

No reason not to, if your garden is safe for them, my lot are usually out in the garden for play and puppy training around 5/6 weeks.

Hi Discusdave,

I had mine in the garden for a couple of hours ever day that was dry (confined in a large play pen) at 4 weeks ;)  Did them the power of good as not only did they get lots of fresh air and used to different textures (grass/slabs) but also was a great help in desensitising them to other noises such as bird song, distant barking, planes going overhead and we had neighbours building an extension at the time too so they had the added bonus of becoming accustomed to all manner of drilling, hammering etc.

regards, Teri :)

I started at 4 weeks as well. Just watch out for little holes in fences etc, amazing what puppies can squeeze through! I had 8 Malinois squeeze into a 2 foot square rabbit hutch, LOL!! All fell asleep in there. Now a few weeks later I don't think one would fit!!

I always put mine in the garden but confined to a pen so I knew they were safe

Frankly I don't know how anyone can rear a litter entirely in the house, as just keepign their quarters saniatary with them confined in an indodor area is a nightmare.

I would always use some form of pen as pups can get into and through the tiniest gaps,a dn there may also be other dangers around the garden.  I have a run outside my kitchen with a double keenenl so they get to go out there from 4 weeks for increasing parts of the day, sharing the time between there and the house, very important here as I cannot accomodate any more than a 5feet by 3 feet area in the kichen because of the shape of it and where doors are.

Mine have gone out on warm days from about 4 weeks as well.

The problem I find though is if there is a cold wet day & you cant let them out they spend all day crying!!! - well mine did anyway.

Please make sure all your plants are safe if you dont have a pen.

That is where having a kennel comes in handy.

I had my double kennel built with connecting internal door and removable shutters on the front below the windows.

When I have a litter which is usually the winter so as to minimise any potential problems with neighbours about noisy puppies (they wake later in winter, and lso people are indoors behind closed doors more), I open this oor, remove the shutters so that they have shelter and a 10 foot by 5 foot area to play and snooze in, if they are wanting outside.

I have a run also BUT have a metal puppy pen almost at my patio doors . It is there all year round to be honest because right up to 6 months if a young pup needs out during the night etc I just pop them in there. I know there are safe and I can get them in quickly if they bark at 4 am :-)
