and bitch not to tie but mate successfully.

If they are mated at the right time and all seems well but they just don't tie.

Was talking to someone recently and they said their 2 bitches never tie but have puppies etc OK.

I know it happens but just wonder how common do you think this is?  Do any of you have similar situations with your own bitches?

everyone seems to have different opinions on this and it may well vary from breed to breed
personally we have never had a litter born from untied matings , on two occasions ive had bitches that didnt tie with the dog and on both occasions the bitches missed. :)

Some breeds mate & the owners prevent a tie (My gran used to do this with bulldogs - dont know why)

I dont know if it still happens though - my grans bulldogs had no probs conceiving.

Dont know if this helps you though!

Even if they dont tie i've heard that people still like to hold the dogs together to make sure enough sperm is propelled in there.  Also JG said to me that the first few thrust clear the vaginal tract then the sperm is with the next.  I could well see a bitch getting pregnant through a slip mating it's all timing really isn't it.

Warm regards Susan

Pam, i've had this with a couple of bitches that have come to Cookie, and both produced 6 puppies, so I would say yes they can have pups with slip matings.

Thanks everyone. I just wondered how common it is as opposed the success rate but I guess it is hard to measure :-)

Hi Blue,

Have heard of quite a few different breeds who've had regular slip matings (including in my own breed) and so far not heard of any that missed either :)   Guess it's really not that uncommon after all.

Teri ;)
