What would you suggest is the best way to deal with Cheery Eye in a Bulldog

1. To have it stitched back
2. To have the cherry eye removed.

Many Thanks
M

Have it completely removed, its less stress on the dog :)
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:12 UTC
What about the risk of Dry Eye ?
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:17 UTC
I have known Bulldogs have Cherry Eye removed and dry eye is only a small risk you take the ones I have known have been fine :) the bigger risk is having it stitched back as sometimes they burst which is more stress on the dog as they have to have it stitched back again.

What has your vet recommended?
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:21 UTC
To have it stitched back and he is an eye specialist and specialises in Bulldogs
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:23 UTC
I know a vet who is a Bulldog specialist who removes Cherry Eye under a local, he never ever recommends them being stitched back, infact the complete opposite.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:28 UTC
How do i know who right and whos wrong.
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:31 UTC
Simple answer is you dont, as theres no right answer if it involves the care and treatment of your own dog.  You have to trust your own judgement :)
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:32 UTC
Do you own Bulldogs ?
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:33 UTC
No, but I know all about Cherry Eye, and I would not have it stitched back.  One of my previous dogs (Neo Mastiff) had hers removed.
- By jmo [gb] Date 14.06.05 13:33 UTC
Take a look on the bulldog rescue pages, they do say that they would not recommend a tuck.  Perhaps get a second opinion from another vet.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:35 UTC
Thanks i did have a look at that as i have asked soooooooooooooo many people on these sites and they say have it removed but when i speak to breeders, vets and information about cheery eye on Bulldog web pages they say have it stitched
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:39 UTC
I would have thought that most Bulldog breeders would recommend it being removed......My dogs Cherry eye was  removed and she did not suffer in any way shape or form after the operation to remove it.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 13:41 UTC
I really appreciate the advice but its hard im getting different advice from so many people.
I think i will opt to have it removed
- By MollMoo Date 14.06.05 13:43 UTC
Phone around various Bulldog vets and ask their opinion, maybe this is worth a try?  To put your mind at rest?
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 14.06.05 14:15 UTC
Thanks ill look on the Bulldog rescue page as they have a page dedicated to Bulldog vets they recommend
- By jmo [gb] Date 14.06.05 14:17 UTC
Hi Mel

I think that is the best thing to do, hope this puts your mind at rest.  Keep us posted

Mel
The bulldog breeders and owners with previous experience of cherry eye you have asked on the forum have ALL told you to have it removed. Not one of us have recommended you have it stitched we've all told you that more than likely it will come back out, or is that why you're asking as it has come back out.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 08:57 UTC
NO It hasdnt come back out. Hes eye look perfect and im 100% glad of my decision. I purley stated im getting lots of different opinions, thanks. I see two Bulldogs down the vets yesterday both puppies who had there cherry eye removed and both have dry eye. I was purley getting advice from everyone from here. I am allowed to seek other peoples opinion. I phoned around various vets last night from the Rescue page and most of them suggested to have it stitched back. I think a qualified vet who sees this sort of thing everyday should know a bit more than a breeder who may only come across it every so often.

Mel WHATEVER!!!!!!!!
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 09:05 UTC
Glad to see a so called experienced breeder gets the ump over a little email. Im purley saying that other people have gave me differnt opinions to yours and im glad with my decision.

I think Melissa, and others I am sure, are a bit annoyed as you have said that bulldog breeders have advised you to have it stitched. I for one can't beleive that any bulldog breeder has advised this, and I know for sure no breeder from our site has advised you this, so I think you should have worded your post a bit better. It kind of gives us a bad name and that we are giving out wrong advise, which is not true.

Can I just ask, why are you asking this when you have already had it stitched back? I would have thought that it is done now, just move on. The risks of dry eye is very low compared to the risk of it popping back out which is considerably higher, this is why we all advised to have it removed. You made your choice which is your right and you did what you thought was best, so why keep on about it? The main thing is that you are happy with the desicion you made, your dog is o.k, so dont' get personal please, that is not needed. Especially when it is to someone who has given you alot of advise and treated you with respect, now please return the favour.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 09:33 UTC
I didnt say any breeders FROM THE SITE or any other site for that matter. If you read what i said properly than you shall see it says "i have spoken" which means i have physically spoken to them by phone etc...... Being told "MEl WHATEVER" is not treating me with very much respect so i dont see why i should return any respect.
Im allowed to ask for peoples opinion regardless if i have had the op or not thats all i was doing i was quite happy getting this advice beofre i had someone sending a stroppy email and interfering.
The thing is if Melissa had a problem with what i wrote then she should have sent me a private message rather than email a stroppy message for all to see.
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 15.06.05 09:47 UTC
Actually, from reading back over your posts, it looks to me like you are just trying to stir up some trouble. You have your opinions and us bulldog people have ours, so lets just leave it like that then. I am not going to feed this anymore.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 09:50 UTC
I would never stir up trouble and as for "Bulldog People" i own a BUlldog so i would be included in that. I was merly getting opinions and no-one else seems to have a problem apart from you two. SO i think you are the ones stirring no one else had a bad word to say about any of it.
- By melissa [gb] Date 15.06.05 10:24 UTC
I replied in that way because you are contradicting yourself, i didn't pm you as i feel i have given you enough advise as it is. One of your posts here says i think i'll opt to have it removed, knowing full well you've already had it stitched in ,your choice. You then go on to say about the pups you saw with dry eye and about how vets know more about this than breeders who only come across it every now and then. If you have so much confidence in your tuck WHY are you still asking what the best option is?
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 10:29 UTC
I will have it removed if it comes out again. I didnt tell people that i had it stitched as when i did on the last site everyone said i didnt the wrong thing and it upset me, so incase it comes out again i was getting the opinion of everyone on here as to the best option. I was just sooo confused how breeders have different opinions to vets as NO OFFENCE they are supossed to be more qualified. I was just asking peoples opinion as to which i got before you came along. I was happy with the advice i got until you came along no offence. I dont wanna row with you as we have to all be on this site together and i would want your advice in the future, im just new at this and its all confusing all the different advice im getting. You keep telling me the eye is going to pop put again so just incase it does i was asking a second opinion on here.
- By melissa [gb] Date 15.06.05 10:38 UTC
No offence meant here but, the only advice i can see here is the same advice i gave you. All i try to do when it comes to bulldogs is give the best advice i can from MY OWN EXPERIENCE,as i only have the breeds best interest at heart, but TBH of all the bulldog breeders i know and speak to, which believe me is a lot of them  [the one's that show anyway] i cannot name ONE of them who would recommend stitching back in, apart from as you say your breeder who as luck may have it have had success with stitching.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 10:41 UTC
I do really appreciate all your advice im just so scared for him if this does happen again. I like my pride is hurt by doing the wrong thing in the first place i feel so bad and im just trying to find someone on here that agrees with stitching. I dont even agree with stitching i just think im trying to find someone to tell me i did the right thing as im really beating myself up about it.
- By melissa [gb] Date 15.06.05 10:44 UTC
I've told you not to beat yourself up about it, what's done is done. I've given you a number for a vet that will remove it in 10 mins without putting him out, Stop feeling bad and enjoy your puppy.
- By Mel23 [eu] Date 15.06.05 10:45 UTC
Yes thanks i have kept that number and she will be the first person i call if it does happen
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 15.06.05 10:57 UTC
You do have to stop beating yourself up Mel, you did what you thought was best and that is all we can do as owners.

I think you will be pushed to find someone that agrees with stitching though ;-) we all live and learn, if we didn't, we would not discover new things. :-)
- By dollface Date 16.06.05 00:30 UTC
T-Bone my Boston Terrier had cherry eye and we had it stitched and have not had a problem with her eye's at all they are beautiful.... Some work and some don't...

If you do a search on here about cherry eye Iam sure you will come up with alot of information and some links I believe, this has been discussed in the past...

Either way best of luck with what you chose to do :)
