Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / 14 week old westie pup

Hi, (my username is Newgirl but it wouldnt let me log in for some reason) Ive had my pup since 7 weeks old and over the course of the following 3 weeks, I had moved her onto Nature diet.  She was fine with this for the first few weeks, altho' sometimes I had to tempt her with a bit of cheese on top!but generally she ate most of it.  She seems to have gone off Naturediet in the last week or so which I think is because of the consistency (it seems very stodgy compared withy some dog foods that has chunks with jelly). Ive given her some mixer with it which seems to help, and Im going to cut down to 3 meals in the next week. Apart from refusing to eat it for most of the following day when she gets some homecooked scraps the night before (im not a meateater so this only happens when visitors come for roasts) I discovered while staying at my sisters for two days that she much prefers her cats food which has chunky meat and jelly bits! So I went out and bought some Chum Puppy and she loves it! I dont particularly want to keep her on this so can anyone suggest a good puppy food with this sort of chunkiness??
Another question: The vet said that I cant give her anything raw until she is 16 weeks as her immune system wont be strong anough to fight any bacteria.  Presumably this size of puppy can have raw chicken wings? What other bones would you suggest for this size of puppy?

Many thanks

Hi Newgirl,

I know what it is like with a puppy and you want to do what is best  but to be honest I think your problem is you have gave her too many or let her get to too many food already. Sorry :-)

Re read your own post and pretend it is someone elses and see what you think ;-)

She has had her original food she came with, nature diet, cheese on top,  you have added mixer, homecooked scraps ,  Cat food, now puppy chum :-)

I bet she ate her food for 7 weeks no problem at the breeders :-)

The chunky texture I think has nothing to do with it.

Drop her to 3 feeds if you want, feed her one food only and let her settle down.  I bet she isnt thin. They are not daft and eat if they want to.

Another thing you may well be doing is giving her too much food, Maybe she isn't hungry :-)   Remember they only eat small amounts at this age. A westie puppy will only eat a few table spoons of food at each feed.

One of my own dogs was starting to be a bit funny so I put him onto one food only, put his food down if he didn't eat it I lifted it.. he is eating it now when I put it down. :-)

Hi and welcome to the site, I also have westies, and the bit about not feeding raw is a load of c***, I have just reared a litter that were weaned onto raw tripe, mixer etc. and are all doing well, I gave the new owners enough food with them for at least 2 wks, did your breeder not give you a diet sheet, most reputable ones will, or discuss with you feeding before you took puppy home. I would
try three small meals a day, morning, lunch and teatime and see how this goes, if it does not eat anything lift the bowl away and remember to leave water down for drinking. A puppy will eat when hungry, As Blue says, you have been giving too much different foods in the past couple of weeks and this can lead to upset tums etc.
