Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Question about companion shows?
- By jelajo [gb] Date 13.06.05 23:42 UTC
Hi, i am hoping to show my 22 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch when she turns 6 months but as im new to the show scene i thought it would be a good idea to do some companion shows with her and my 3 year old dog RR.
What i was wondering was, do i just turn up and enter and can i enter my older boy who is not kc registered or is it like a open or champ show with regards to entries? Theres a companion show in Bristol next saturday so we were hoping to have our 1st weekend away camping with the 2 dogs?
Any info would be much appreciated.

Just turn up on the day Jodi - the pedigree classes don't require KC registered names for entries or anything like that - just basically that dogs are pedigree breeds :)  And if you want a laugh and to add a bit to the coffers of whichever charity event is benefitting you can take part in the novelty classes too!

Hope you enjoy it - they're great fun, no pressure and full of folk who love dogs as much as we do :P

Regards, Teri

puppies under 6 months cant be shown at companion shows, if you wanted the practice though some shows let you show the pup but it cant be placed :)

Thanx guys, hopefully we will go just for the experience, if she cant get placed then not too worry, will be nice for her to see anyways. How will they know how old she is and would it be bad of me to say she was 6 months, afterall shes only a few weeks off?????? Is any body going to the companion show at the recreation field, leigh on mendip, nr frome, somerset???? Does anybody know the area and is there camping anywhere nearby???

Most people show their dogs from 5 months at companion shows and say they are 6 months, you usually get away with it no problem, I have done in the past - and yes got slammed on here for doing it

NOw I didn't say this but lie! :)  ( times out of 10 if an experianced judge they will ask age, you say 6 mths, they say ok, think to themselves yeah right, but place you accordingly anyway! :)

I've also seen it the other way, dogs over 12 months entering in the puppy classes. I think it's a bit sad that people have to lie just to get a rossette. Is winning really that important to people. SAD!
In terms of entering a dog under 6 months. I personally wouldn't but I can see why people do in terms of practise for their pup.
Be guided by your own conscience.

I would never lie and put a overage dog in.  But I do put underage puppies in for experiance at a fun show before they hit the bigger shows at 6 months.  I have difficulting training at ringcraft as a couple of local ones we don't like the training style and we run one so are busy teaching other people.  I no spend anything up to 45 mins on junior handling!  Good job I know something about it! :D

OK i have to agree with rox on this one, i could never put an overaged dog in a class at even fun shows, but i would underaged ones to get them experiance but only 5 months, i have seen alot younger than 5 month old puppies get away with it in the pedigree classes :O
