Can anyone suggest a suitable collar for a double coated breed? At present my dog has a soft material type collar but it is breaking his fur.I show him and need to find a suitable alternative.

Have you considered not putting a collar on him except when he's outside or being shown? Just a thought. :)

As Quinn said why not leave one off until you're going out? My GSD has a puppy choke chain, NEVER on choke- I clip it back on it's self and attach the lead (if you can understand what I mean;)) The only time she wears a collar is when she's got the lead on:)

You could try a rolled leather collar. They are supposed to be kinder to fur although I've never tried one.

Because of Barney's "broken" legs we have to keep his collar on to make it easier to stop top him jumping about and his hair is getting matted now whereas it didnt before. So I think the best thing is to leave him collarless as much as pos. (Hes a lhasa by the way).

I have Elkhounds and use half slip co;;ars. the collar part is round leather. They are made by Acolade leathercraft, try a google search, as I beleive they have a website. They do them in two thicknesses, and my strong Champion bitch has one in the thicker grade. My dogs are shown, but always wear a collar with tags!

The problem with relying soley on microchipping is that there have been many postings discussing the movements of said chips. How many of those who are scanning think to check the dog's elbow or chest for a chip?

The other point is that there's still a tendency to see a dog running loose without a collar and automatically think "Stray". :( If someone finds the dog, it's easier to justify keeping it, because "no one cared enough to put a simple collar and tags on it." It's also quicker for someone to realize where the owner lives in case of emergency.

In Germany, France, & US, some areas do require proof of rabies vaccination to be kept on the dog in case of trouble. Don't know if UK does the same.

I also like having my dogs' collars on because I can unconciously keep track of where they are in the house. When they were younger, it was like having kids.... too quiet = trouble :D :D :D :D

The UK does not require rabies vaccinations so no proof is necessary. The legal requirement is to have a collar with a tag that has owners name and address on it when dog is in a public place although this requirement is ignored by many people.

I used to leave collars on in the house until last November when I went on holiday with a couple of friends and all our dogs. The three youngest dogs were only 10 months old at the time, my Django and Truffle, and their brother Dylan who is owned by my friend. We had just come in one evening and were having a cup of tea in the kitchen with the dogs around us when Dylan started to scream. We discovered that Dylan had his tooth caught in Django's collar. It took a few moments to separate them and it was only then that I realised that Django was unconscious and not breathing. My friend had to do artificial respiration on him whilst I looked for the vets telephone number although we later realised that had we not managed to resuscitate him we would have been too late to get to the vets. Had we not been in the room Django would have been dead.

Since then my dogs have only worn collars whilst actually on the lead and even then, legal requirement or not, I tend to use slip leads.

Joan,
I completely see your point and I'm relieved that Django survived. To wear or not to wear collars is a difficult quandry just due to safety issues on both sides of the fence. I guess it has to come down to the individual owner to decide what is best for the situation

I do take the collars off of my dogs when they start playing, especially since Samma likes to "direct" Chienne by grabbing her collar and pulling her around. Sometimes they stay off for a while, but I don't feel comfortable not having their ids and tags on long term ...despite both dogs being chipped. They've never escaped the yard/house, but it's still a concern. It's just not as common for US and Germans to have their dogs chipped, so rarely does the 'authorities' think of checking for them.

The 'girls' even like having their collars on since they race up after their baths to have them put back on -- yep, strange dogs ;-) :p They also don't play anywhere except under my feet or right next to me :) It's a social event, I guess

It is actually the law that a dog wear a collar and tag when out in public. I would never not have collars on, as you never know, an open door and they could be gone!
- By John [gb] Date 06.06.02 17:44 UTC
Yes, It's very true that collars are required by law. If a dog gets out and is wearing a collar and tag then it's an easy matter to return the dog to it's owner.
The only dogs not required to wear collars are working sheepdogs and working gundogs.
