Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Sedation of a bitch for mating
- By LJS Date 12.06.05 11:49 UTC
I am sure this is a big no when putting a stud to a bitch ?

I was amazed last night hearing that somebody in our village who mated her bitch (cocker) sedated the bitch (the vet did this who happened to be the sire's owner) because she was aggressive towards him :(

The poor bitch must have been truamatised. :( The woman has kept a pup and is going to breed from her as well. Guess what for the money  It was the bitches first season and she is going to breed from her again this season :( :(

Oh boy - sounds like you have people in your village similar to those in ours :(

And the vet suggested it/carried it out????    Absolutely speechless!

I've never heard of sedation before. What is needed is patience, if a bitch just doesn't want to mate I couldn't bring myself to put her through the trauma.

Hi
That just says it all really - and the studs owner was a VET :( :(   Rather unethical :(

I think that the vet needs looking into if this has really happened!!!!!!  I'm sorry I just can't believe it.  I'm almost typeless :d

Just shows even more so that vets have absolutely no idea when it comes to breeding.  Sorry to be generalistic here but I can't believe what I've just read.
- By LJS Date 12.06.05 13:26 UTC
Yes I was the same last night when I was told :(

I am trying to find out some more details.

"It was the bitches first season and she is going to breed from her again this season"

Perhaps I'm being slow here but if I read this right, then the bitch would be amted young and on two consecutive seasons? Are the pups being DLR registered? I can't see the KC allowing this?

I'm sure the RCVS would not be impressed by this vet's actions either.
- By LJS Date 12.06.05 15:58 UTC
I am not sure if they are KC but she is 18 months so had them just after she was 12 months old I presume.
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.06.05 16:53 UTC
Surely if the bitch was aggressive with the stud either she was not of good temperament and should not have been bred from, or she wasn't ready to accept the stud - so still shouldn't have been mated on that/those occasions :( :(

Typical really of the money-makers, no consideration for the bitch, just get those little money bundles no matter how :(

Don't think the RCVS would be impressed with this,  does it happen with pigs, cattle, horses?  not the same thing I know ;) but perhaps it was the way the vet was thinking,  - still very wrong tho IMHO
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 12.06.05 18:15 UTC
We've had two bitches for stud who refused to stand.   No way would we sedate them.    The timing was reckoned to be accurate.

They both died of cancer within the year.

Coincidence?   I don't know.

As I remember it from my days on the farm, most cattle are AI mated if not they usually just run with the bul in the herd and therefore they may or may not mate. Sheep run loose with the ram, pigs I think are pretty much like cattle and AI or if with a boar you don't force the issue and never would you sedate any of these animals, so it just would not happen. Horses I'm not sure about, I just used to take mares to the stud, leave them there then collect them later when they were ready to come home.
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.06.05 19:42 UTC
So it doesn't happen then in farm animals :) didn't think it would, but wanted to be sure.  In that case can't imagine what the vet was thinking!
- By krankypuss [au] Date 12.06.05 20:18 UTC
What a discusting display from a vet..I think he needs to be reported and to mate a bitch that young is ridiculous. The poor mite hasnt even finished developing herself. This person obviously does not have the welfare of any animal on his mind.
- By kia mummy [gb] Date 13.06.05 16:09 UTC
I've said it before and I'll say it again.Vets know BU**AR ALL about breeding.
Apology to those of you that are vets  or have an exceptional vet,but In my experience I almost always know more than they do
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 16:55 UTC
how many seasons a year does a bitch has and does a dog(male) have certain breeding times as well
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:01 UTC
What an odd question for someone with your username!

Anyway, the average bitch has two seasons a year, each lasting about 3 weeks. A male dog is in breeding condition 365 days a year, once mature.
- By Teri Date 13.06.05 17:03 UTC
Sounds like a standard vet question to me :D   Next they'll want to know is how long to leave it between boosters :D :D :D

Oh dear, feeling silly again .....

Teri ;)
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:12 UTC
if your not gonna help me don't reply with witty comments
- By Teri Date 13.06.05 17:30 UTC
Well I suppose it's a start that you've acknowledged that you need help ........

Fire away, Teri ;)
- By Val [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:35 UTC
Are you planning to mate your dog and bitch or avoid them mating??
- By Val [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:13 UTC
LOL @ Teri ;)
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:47 UTC
i don't have a bitch or a dog im just wondering. bu my friends gonna mate his dog with a bitch some time early next year
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:48 UTC
does the bitch only be able to conceive when she's fully adult
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:54 UTC
he knows alot about breeding and that but i don't that's why i asking.

he's gonna sell the pup's to a dog training facility(guard and protection dogs)

if there's 8 pupp's it's gonna be 4 each if it 9 then 4 to the man and 5 to the friend.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:59 UTC
Just as girls can become pregnant when they're not adult, so can bitches. It's cruel to breed from a bitch before she's mature. Of course, both dogs and bitches need to have passed all the breed-relevant health tests before they're mated.
- By Val [gb] Date 13.06.05 17:52 UTC
With such a lot to learn before your friend takes on such a serious undertaking as breeding a litter of puppies, it would be a good idea if they joined the relevant breed club to learn from experts in the breed.
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:01 UTC
are you talking about me learning or them learning.

cos they all ready know and if they don't then there gonna do it anyway. there gonna do all vaccins and checks and everything.
- By Anndee [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:08 UTC
Sounds like its already predecided, so why come on here asking nonsensical questions. Is it just to wind people up? Not a clever idea on here methinks :D
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:10 UTC
if you lot arn't gonna help then fine just say so don't ask stupid questions
- By Val [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:16 UTC
Questions aren't stupid "vet" if good and relevant advice is going to be given.
But I must say, that from the answers that you've given, I'll not be helping your 'friend' to produce puppies. :(
- By vet [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:18 UTC
well isn't beter to help then to not help if u helping would say 2 puppies wouldn't you do it???
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:23 UTC
I'm sorry, I don't understand that question.
- By MINI-MEG [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:18 UTC
i think people are just a bit baffled as with having a user name as vet people would of assumed that you would know all this being a vet an all! :d
- By Isabel Date 13.06.05 18:23 UTC
Doesn't "vet" in the US mean ex-services?  I'd put a fiver on that in this instance it doesn't mean veterinary surgeon :D
- By LJS Date 13.06.05 18:35 UTC
Vet would you mind going to seperate thread as don't really want this thread locked :)

many thanks

Lucy
- By MINI-MEG [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:43 UTC
you could be rite isabel.my first thought would of been vet tho! i would never of thought of that lol :d
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 13.06.05 18:57 UTC
'vet' - A misnomer if ever I heard one.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.05 19:06 UTC
How are they going to do the x-rays that are required?
- By dollface Date 14.06.05 01:58 UTC
That is just sad, maybe the bitch wasn't even ready to stand :(
- By vet [gb] Date 14.06.05 18:13 UTC
i don't understand wat u people are talking about now.

how do u close this thread thing
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 14.06.05 18:16 UTC
Vet, you said your friend was going to do the required checks. How is he going to do the x-rays?
- By vet [gb] Date 14.06.05 18:19 UTC
in the vets and if the vets don't have it then there gonna askthem for a referal to where they can.
