Hi all you experienced Shepherd owners/breeders. Can you tell me when White came into Shepherds and where it came from originally. ?  I am looking to have a Shepherd after a long break. Then  long coats were frowned upon and black used to be rare .

It has been there since the beggining but was undesireable, there are a lot now being deliberately bred as it is fashionable.

Long coats are still frowned upon! Personally, I love them and have a long coated shepherd (black and gold) and have just got a long coated black pup - now 13 weeks old.

There are pbreeders who breed blacks for the colour alone & quite a few are actually black & not very dark sables. Black is not a fault I used to assist in showing the last top winning all black bitch who had a Res CC & one CC, black GSDs as good as her are very few & far between
