Topic Dog Boards / Health / Oily/Flaky coat!!!

Hi, I am new here, but have learned a lot while reading all posts that thought I'd give it a go myself!
Only a minor prob (I hope!)
Daisy, my 5 year old basset bitch has had a complete coat change over the last month or so.
She has always looked really healthy, not too thin, nor too fat. Now she has suddenly put on a bit of weight, although this might be due less exercise but have reduced her food. Exercised less as we have a litter of puppies and am paranoid that she will bring back a germ.
Her coat is contrarily both oily and scurfy if that makes any sense. She feels really greasy and yet there are flakes on top. Daily grooming doesn't make a difference.
haven't given her a bath as this is the one thing (other than my neighbours) that she really really hates, so would do this as a last resort.
I wonder if she could have a hormone problem, she had a litter of puppies nearly 3 years ago, but on two subsequent matings, she missed. I am a bit reluctant to take her to the vets when there seems to be no apparent illness, she is totally 100% herself, just looks a bit scabby!!!

Any advice appreciated,
Susy

The infertility, weight gain, and coat changes would make me want to get her Thyroid levels thoroughly checked (for under active Thyroid).  she is the right age to be getting this problem as this usually occcurs betwwen 4 and 10 years old from the info I have found.

Thank you Brainless.  Does the thyroid act the same in dogs as it does in Humans?  I have a friend who had thryoid probs, but she felt really down in the dumps too ( mind, could have been the 2 stone she put on!!)
Do thyroid problems clear up with a course of treatment or is it a lifelong thing. It wouldn't bother me, just curious.
If sorted would it them mean that she may be able to be bred from again, although she will be 6 this year, maybe too old. She only ever had one litter of 10.

It is lifelong, but you notice an improvement within a week of supplementation.  Once the dosage has been sorted all symtoms should resolve within about 6 weeks.
