Topic Dog Boards / General / Age to start training classes?
- By carol_vet Date 11.06.05 11:04 UTC
Hello! just wondering at what age I should start taking yankee baby Pippin who is nearly 9 weeks,  to training classes and ring craft? Would he be too young to start after his booster vaccination?
thanks everyone!!
Carol :)

Hi Carol,
most classes will take the puppies as soon as they have cleared their vaccinations, so thats usually around 12 weeks, we always start ours as soon as possible, the earlier they are socialised the less trauma in the show ring, or indeed in everyday life, meeting strange dogs/people etc.
Hope you have lots of fun with your baby
hope to see you around the yankie rings soon
regards
Pauline

Hi
When I took my new puppy to be vaccinated recenty I was told they had a new vaccine and the pups can now be vaccinated at 8 weeks and final one at TEN weeks, which means I am taking him to dog club aged 11 weeks. :) Even if they don't necessarily DO a lot when tiny, get tired walking etc, its often a good idea to just go along and sit and watch to get the puppy used to the atmosphere. :)

This is fairly common - my bitch is almost two and had hers at 8 and 10 weeks :)

It's never too early to socialise, and most trainers will run puppy classes specifically aimed at those puppy problems and providing good opportunities to socialise - which does NOT mean unlimited 'free play' - avoid a class that offers this like the plague as it only teaches bold puppies how to bully and submissive puppies to hide :(

Thanks Pauline and Digger for great advice! Digger you are right about those classes, I have seen puppy parties in vets when seeing practice and alot of them were not controlled and some puppies didnt seem to be enjoying them at all :(
Pippin was the most dominant puppy in his litter as he is very confident and appears quite fearless for a small puppy and not afraid of Ollie, the cat, car,  noises of any type, or hearing my neighbours dog barking!! :D I am glad that he is confident and it will be good in the ring as he already looks like he wants to show, but how can I stop him getting over-confindent, or should I even be worrying about that? Pauline I am sure we will meet in yankee ring soon!!Cant wait to go to some UK shows! :)

One of mine started training as soon as she had her first jab at 8 weeks. All the other pups had had at least one of their vaccinations and were carried too and from the hall. THe hall was only used for dog training, all of which were vaccinated. I think the importance of early socialsation outweights the very small risk their maybe becuase they haven't had their second jab. I would never take them without any jabs ,and never walk them before they are allowed.
