After your bitch has passed all the breed-relevant health checks, contact her breeder and ask for advice on which lines to avoid.

the owner has moved away now the only thing she told me was to travel 4 a stud

Then your next port of call would be to contact the breed club/s listed at the bottom of the Breed Standard and ask for advice from them.

all i no is here health is 100 percent and that her dad is a ped winner

Laura you cannot know her health is 100% until you have had her health screening tests done. Ask the breed club what is neccessary, when you speak to them about a stud dog.

What do you mean, she has been in with her health?    It's not clear what you mean - has she had all the health tests required by the Shar Pei breed?  (sorry as it's not my breed, I'm not too sure which tests are necessary).   You say your breeder has moved away, so can't help, so perhaps you should be contacting the Breed Society who will be able to advise you.

There are no current health tests required before breeding a shar pei, so the best you can do is make sure she is in good health at the time of breeding & make sure you research your pedigrees for a compatible stud. Contact as many breeders as you can, sending them a copy of her pedigree & ask them if they have a male that might be suitable for her. Not every shar pei female is good enough to be bred, does she have any faults according to the breed standard? What are her parents names?   

I would think they should be Hip scored at least as all breeds can get Hip Dysplasia.

As Skyota rightly said make sure you know what problems could be unlying in your bitches pedigree lines.  The KC and breed clubs haven't made it one of the health tests to date, (as skyota said there aren't any breed health test required) there aren't many dogs or bitches that have been Hipscored, its been on a voluntary basis.

Even the top winning  CC Bitch and show Dogs haven't been hipscored. All that the responsible breeders can do is to check out as much as possible before even contemplating any breeding programme.

Unfortunately Hypothyroidism is now coming to the for front, I was 100% sure one of my girls was showing all classical signs, but several local vets wouldn't believe that this was what she was suffering from.. I was that concerned I sent out a sample of blood serum to DR. Jean Dodds in USA, whom having tested for full bio chem and hypo t showed up that Ash did indeed suffer from Hypo T, so much for my vets and their partners for not believing me :-(  I seriously DO believe that some of the breeds skin and  coat conditions of the past and present are basically  suffering from HYPO T. But the vets just see our breed as a mega money earner unfortunatley :-(

As soon as I managed to get Ash stable, as she also suffers from Yeast Over growth and Allergic to Yeast and Mold, I had her spayed and was indeed taken out of any of my breeding plans, which was a pity as she is a rather nice show standard bitch, but the health of any progeny and herself was my first thought.

So like I said earlier, breeders just have to be vigilent and as honest as they can re any health issues that maybe in their lines.  Its a pity not all breeders comply to this :-( this is why so many health issues are now showing up, as the new owner buys the puppy from a none recognised breeder, ( without breeding restrictions) takes their money, an doesn't want to know (of doesn't care) what happens to the puppy they bred if any health issues appear at a later date.  To many puppies of this lovely breed are falling into homes where they just want to breed from their bitch and go to the nearest Sharpei male without even taking time to compare pedigrees etc, thinking there's mega bucks to be made, and we as breeders all KNOW that this is a total MYTH :-)

Not enough research is being under taken from the new owners. As they normally go out to look in free paper adds  etc. There is also so called breeders that are breeding for colour only, one I know about didn't have a sharpei a couple of years ago, and now has about 10 basically importing none breed standard colours (charging £1000 for a pet & £1200 if you wish to breed) and this is from a parti colour :-(

I note the Hip Score range for the breed has been 4 to 81 (the latter much higher than in our breed which advises all breeding animals should be scored).  Teh Shar Pei mean average is 18, with a median of 11.  Certainly Hip Scoring would seem to be sensible.

hi isnt this the bitch that has mange? as i wouldnt of thought you couldnt breed o dog with this,wether it apperes to be clearing up or not!

Good God that's double the score in our breed and we are worried that we may have a problem.  Our Club now insists that all breeding dogs should be scored and eye tested and thankfully for many of us breeders even pet people are helping us out in having their dogs scored too.

I think that all breeds should have the basic tests carried out as I'm sure that most breeds have problems and it's no good saying that our breed doesn't have a problem because this isn't true until the breeds are tested.  I'm sure that even many x-breeds have a problem but because they are not tested no-one really knows.

Yes I notice that Bulldog Hip Scores are nothing to shouot home about, and they don't score as a rule.  Disgraceful really.  I see that Dobes still have under a thousand dogs scored and that many get bred each year!

In my breed out of 120 pups bred a year since we ahve made it part to the breed clubs codes of ethics all bredding stock (and lots of others) get scored.  We ahve about 25 scored a year which is about 20% of the annual total regisrations so would say that our Hip data is somewhat more reflective of the true picture in teh breed.

There is no room for complacency in any breed.

Shar pei have their hips done in the US & Europe, but for some reason it still hasn't been recommended in this country by either Club.
