We have had Pip our rescue terrier cross for about 6 months now.  He was an absolute nightmare when we first had him but we have persevered.  He was really hyper, not housetrained, awful with our cats, play fighting all the time with our other dog, a female Westie, Lucy.

Pip is probably about 18months/two now.  He is much improved. Is housetrained, less hyper (although does have his moments), has been castrated and attends training sessions.  He is cute,  being tri coloured, smallish although long skinny legs, a mad wire coat and a face like a fox terrier!

However he is still bad about chewing.  He picks up everything in his mouth, goodness knows what he has swallowed.  As he can jump high he springs up and for instance gets hold of hairbrushes from my dressing table,  earrings, combs eetc.  Outside he raids the recycling box and chews up plastic bottles, cartons etc.  He has chewed our telephones, in fact chews everything he can get at and it is difficult to keep everything out of reach.  Has chewed computer cables,  ruined shoes, you name it!

In himself he seems much more secure now so I don't know why he is still exhibiting this "puppy" streak.  He doesn't do it when left alone - normally it is when I am around, really as if he is looking for trouble!

Any ideas?  Anyone had the same? I have had several dogs but none chewed past the puppy stage.

Thanks
Leonora

My youngest at 18 months chewed until about 6 months ago.  Wood was his favourite.  Dogs teeth settle down at about 8 months so this can again trigger a chewing phase as it can cause them some pain.  In the end we used Vicks Vapourub and put it on everything he was chewing.  It stopped it dead in his tracks.  We dont have to use it at all and he has got out of the habit.
