My Bitch had her litter of puppies in the early hours of this morning (6) in total but the last 2 were delivered at the vets. The last puupy to be born came out with a strange back leg. The best way i can describe it is instead of using his paw to get around the whelping box he uses his wrist. The leg also looks bent compared to the puppies in the litter. The vet checked him over and said that he did'nt think it was broke that it could be the way he's been lying inside the bitch. Has anyone ever seen this before? I think i wiil take him for a second opinon on Tue ( vets closed Mon due to bank holiday)
never seen it personnaly in dogs, but wen i helped out on a farm a goat gave birth to a kid like this.i cant remember how long it took but it did eventually correct its self! must of been the way it had been lying in the womb! if its no better by the time there 2weeks old ide take it back the vets and get it checked over! :)
hi welshi, same thing just happened to me with my bitch, she walked on her wrist with her little foot folded under,i thought she looked deformed, anyway to cut it short she is now fine and youd never know she was like that when born, her foot and leg are as straight as the other one, i was advised to give one tiny drop of abidec childrens vitamin a day which i did and i saw a difference in 3 days,i started giving this at approx 3 weeks old and gave it for a week with a few days break in between, i was told its the way she laid in mum or that her bones are soft, please be rest assured it does happen to quite a few pups and they do come right,i wouldnt even take her to the vet, good luck and do let me know how she goes with it,
louzola
sorry welshie, dont want to confuse you about the abidec, give one tiny drop each day for a week then have 3 days off and give another tiny drop once a day for a week, you get it from boots but dont give any more than one drop onto her tongue,
louzola
Thanks louzola for your advice will go to boots in the morning. The pups at the moment are only 3 days old. When would You recomend that we start giving the puppy the abidec Also did you keep your puppy with the funny shaped leg or was she ok by the time they are ready to leave to go onto new homes.
hi, i started giving it at 3 weeks old, i cant stress enough to only give one tiny drop a day, and yes ive kept the one with the funny leg as shes very nice and im hoping she does well in the ring, whod of thought shed be the one but there you go,shes perfect now and her foot was very bent and she walked on the side of it and on her wrist,i was so worried that i thought shed be crippled,so good luck and let us know
louzola
hi welshie,hows the baby?
louzola
well 11 days now and i quite often can,t tell which one had the poorley leg semms to be useing it fine noy bent now i will know more when he,s standing At the moment they all scurry about more than walk I have.nt give anything yet Do you think i should still giveabidec when he,s 3 weeks//////////thanks for asking will let you know how we go
well thats good welshie, see how the puppy is when 3 weeks and if its still a little funny looking then give her a drop for a week,
I had a Pomeranian many years ago born like this but it was quite severe and it had been that she was lay in her mother in a certain way for a long time so her leg grew crooked. She couldn't properly use it except to have a scratch but we left it on and she had a happy and long life. Have to admit tha we never sold her though!
