Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Pee Posts - both sexes?
- By NannyOgg [gb] Date 08.06.05 15:30 UTC
I wasn't sure where to put this question, but I was wondering whether pee posts work for both male and female dogs? I was told by a friend who has a 12 week old golden retriever puppy that pee posts only work for male dogs. I was wondering if this was the case or not. We are going to be getting a GSD bitch puppy and have allocated a spot near our back door as a toilet training area. I have cleared away the area and laid down turf etc, and we will take our puppy out there every half hour from when we get her, as well as after meals and play and first thing in the morning and last thing at night, but I wondered if the pee post might act as an additional encouragement to toilet in that area?
Thanks.

I'm not sure whether a pee post will work or not - but I would suggest that your poor turf is NOT going to survive!  Bitch's urine will turn all grass brown :(

I would suggest that you change your turf for a patch of gravel - that way, you can "water"  the urine away with a disinfectant/deodorant - otherwise it will "niff" a bit!

Yes, in the short-term. If left alone the grass will grow back greener than before.

We were thinking of putting down (and don't laugh...!) but like a massive 'litter' of gravel, but I am not too worried if the grass goes brown, as long as I can kind of encourage her to just go in that one place.

Now, I may be being dumb here, but was the comment about the grass growing back green sarcasm or real? It is very hard to tell by reading!

Thanks for the advice about the pee post though!

Not sarcasm, NannyOgg - true fact! All the years I've had bitches they've peed on the lawn, the patch of grass goes brown, then after a couple of months the only way you can tell where the spot was is that the grass there is healthier than the surrounding area! Over the years I think they've treated my whole lawn - it's looking fab!

(Where the boys have cocked their legs is another matter, though - that's totally dead.)

Well, that's just men for you I think!

Thanks for that, I won't mind any brown patches one bit now!
